Mentor Hopes To Demolish Its 'Bridge To Nowhere' Next Year

The proposed 2013 budget includes about $250,000 for the demolition of an incomplete, eroding bridge in the Mentor Lagoons

The city of Mentor likely won't have a "bridge to nowhere" for much longer. About $250,000 has been set aside in the city's proposed 2013 budget for the demolition of an unfinished and eroding bridge in the southwest portion of the Mentor Lagoons Marina near Coronada Drive. The 185-foot bridge has no beginning or end, just a middle that stands over the water near the Mentor-on-the-Lake border. Its construction began in the 1920s but the Great Depression ended the project. It was intended to connect to a residential development that never was, and never will be, built. "It's not a structure that's useful in any way or has any future utility," Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak. However, the city's concern is not that the bridge is …

State Approves Mentor's Plan To Build Breakwall By Mentor Lagoons

The intended breakwall would prevent further erosion at Mentor Lagoons' beach

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has approved the city of Mentor's plan to build a 500-foot stone breakwall that would prevent more erosion from the Mentor Lagoons' beach. Since 2004, that stretch of bluffs has lost about 200 feet, said Bob Martin, the city of Mentor's director of parks and recreation. And the recent warm winter expedited that erosion, Martin added. Consequently, the city has proposed to build the breakwall that will protect the shoreline from the Mentor Harbor Yacht Club across the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has already approved the plan. Martin hopes the construction of the wall will begin this fall, before Lake Erie can do another winter's worth of damage. The wall is …

STERIS Keeps Growing & Stroud Admits To Murder: The Week In Review

A lot of big news broke this week in Mentor

1. A lot of big news this week in Mentor -- so much that I hardly know where to begin. Well, when in doubt, start with the money. Steris Corp. -- the city of Mentor's biggest employer -- announced this week that it is acquiring U.S. Endoscopy for $270 million. (After some anticipated tax benefits, the price tag will probably be about $220 million.) The acquisition will continue Steris's aggressive growth. Most importantly, it makes sure that the more than 400 jobs U.S. Endoscopy created will stay in Mentor. Read more here. 2. Former Mentor Police officer and Lake County special deputy Gary Stroud pleaded guilty to the murder of his wife and the abuse of her corpse Monday afternoon in Lake County Court of Common Pleas. Stroud, 59, of Mentor…

City Of Mentor Wants To Install Breakwall To Prevent Beach Erosion At Mentor Lagoons

The bluffs east of the Mentor Harbor Yacht Club have already lost about 200 feet since 2004

While last year's warm winter may have been a pleasant surprise for many, it was bad news for beaches. When Lake Erie doesn't freeze, its waves can reach eight feet high and those waves speed up the erosion of shoreline, explained Bob Martin, the city of Mentor's director of parks and recreation. The city of Mentor is especially concerned about a stretch of shoreline that reaches from the Mentor Harbor Yacht Club across the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve. Since 2004, that stretch of bluffs has lost about 200 feet, Martin said. "The lake really started to accelerate (the erosion) during the winter," he said. "We didn't freeze last year and the winter waves just tear things up." However, the city of Mentor does have a plan to stall the …

The article incorrectly states the city will pay $225,000. Actually, the taxpayers will pay it. Ask them what they would like to do; or show how revenues from the area will equal or exceed the cost.   more ›

Mentor Still Looking For Concessionaire At Lagoons

City Manager's Office says it hopes Council will have some options to choose from in the next two weeks

The city of Mentor hoped to have a food vendor in Mentor Lagoons by Memorial Day, but just because that date has come and gone doesn't mean the city is not still searching for a concessionaire. The City Manager's Office told City Council in a memo that it received no proposals by last week's deadlin. "The most likely reason is that in our haste to secure a vendor by Memorial Day weekend we did not provide enough time for responses," the memo read. "However, we have since directly contacted several food/beverage operators who have indicated an interest in possibly considering an arrangement." The memo also noted that the city hoped to have a few proposals from which Council could select in the next two weeks. The vendor they pick would sell…

City Looking To Bring Food Vendor To Mentor Lagoons

Concessionaires have until Wednesday to apply

The city of Mentor is looking for a concessionaire to sell food this summer at Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve and Marina. The vendor would sell food and (nonalcoholic) drinks from Memorial Day to Labor Day and the city is looking for applicants on its web site. Any vendor who is selected -- and a food truck could qualify -- would have a license, not a lease, to operate. The concessionaire would have to be open, at very least, on weekends and the summer holidays. They would also be expected to have all necessary licenses. Any interested vendors must apply by Wednesday. For more information and an application, check out the legal notice on the city of Mentor's web site.
