Nobody in either the car or building were injured, according to the Mentor Fire Department
A motorist shattered a few windows and damaged the facade of the building when she crashed into the McDonald' PlayPlace on Reynolds Road at about 12:45 p.m. Tuesday. Fortunately, neither she nor anyone in the building was seriously hurt during the crash, Mentor Fire Battalion Chief Joseph Busher said. The incident began when an 89-year-old woman from Mentor tried to turn left into the McDonald's parking lot, Mentor Police Lt. Dan Molnar said. First, she hit a car while turning, Molnar said. Then she drove over the landscaping and into the front of the building. Nobody in either of the affected cars or in the McDonald's needed to be taken to the hospital for treatment, Busher said. The crash downed live power lines and caused some areas to lose power
Updated at 4 p.m. Traffic is re-opened in both directions Mentor Police and Fire Departments closed the Center Street-Tyler Road intersection after a crash knocked down live power lines in the area Wednesday afternoon, according to the Mentor Police Facebook page. Traffic is being directed down Tyler and to Bellflower and Market Streets. The intersection will remain closed until the power lines are removed. Some businesses and homes lost power after the crash. However, according to FirstEnergy's web site, fewer than five FirstEnergy customers were still without power as of 2:50 p.m. If you are without power, you can report the outage by calling 1-888-LIGHTSS or use FirstEnergy's web site. Five people, including four children, were taken to the hospital as a safety precaution after a crash Monday evening in Mentor. The crash happened at 6:20 p.m. on the ramp between State Route 306 and Route 2's westbound lanes, Mentor Fire Lt. Bob Evans said. The crash involved two cars but one car left before police and firefighters arrived, Mentor Police Sgt. Mark Stansbury said. A family of said were in the car that did not leave. Firefighters from Mentor and Willoughby Fire Departments took the mother and 12-, 9- and 8-year-old children to TriPoint Medical Center in Concord Township for evaluation. The Mentor Fire Department will be collecting donations during its 18th Feed The Needy Food Drive this weekend at Great Lakes Mall. From 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the firefighters -- along with their ladder truck -- will be stationed by the mall's northeast entrance near Max & Erma's restaurant. They will be accepting food and cash donations. Money will be used to buy groceries from Giant Eagle that, along with the donated food, will be given to the United Way of Lake County. The United Way will then distribute the food to as many local food banks as possible. In the last 18 years, this food drive has collected more than $100,000 worth of food that has gone to families who need it.

Daniel Vanderhoof Jr. -- the man accused of driving into a house on Comanche Trail and sending four people, including two young children, to the hospital -- was arraigned Monday morning in Mentor Municipal Court. Vanderhoof, 28, of Willoughby, faces four charges of aggravated vehicular assault. He is also accused of drunken driving, driving without a license, reckless operation and fleeing the scene of a crash. Vanderhoof could only choose to plead not guilty or make no plea. He made no plea. Acting Judge Jeffrey McGaffick set his bond at $410,000. Vanderhoof asked for a smaller bond. "I have to be out there working every day for my family," he told the judge. The Mentor Fire Department took four people to the hospital after a car crashed into their house at 7044 Comanche Trail at about 3 a.m. Sunday. A 1991 Mercury Grand Marquis had been driving fast on Iroquois Trail and the driver went straight at the T-intersection of Iroquois and Comanche, Mentor Police Sgt. Mike Majernik said. The car drove completely into a house -- trapping a 3-year-old boy beneath the car and pinning an 18-month-old infant in her play pen against the wall, Mentor Fire Battalion Chief Joseph Busher said. The car also injured the adult man and woman in the home. The driver of the car fled from the home. However, police believe they have arrested him, as well as his passenger. Don Chiappone, 51, of Mentor is dead after he crashed his motorcycle Monday, according to Mentor Police. The crash occurred at 3:20 p.m. Monday on Hidden Glen Drive near the Meadowvale Drive cul-de-sac. Chiappone was driving his 2001 Yamaha motorcycle east on Hidden Glen when it went off the north side of the road and hit two garbage cans, Mentor Police Lt. Dan Molnar said. After hitting the garbage cans, the motorcycle continued east on the roadway where the motorcycle fell and began to slide. Chiappone and the motorcycle stopped sliding in front of a house on the 9200 block of Hidden Glen. The Mentor Fire Department transported Chiappone to Hillcrest Hospital where he was declared dead. Mentor firefighers stopped a house fire in the Headlands neighborhood late Sunday night. The fire department received a call about the fire at 5750 Meister Road at about 11:30 p.m., Battalion Chief Kevin Edmond said. The fire had started in the wall of the living room, nearby the fire place, Edmond said. Firefighters had to break open the wall to hose the flames, but they were able to stop the fire before it spread throughout the house, Edmond said. It took about 30 minutes for firefighters to get the blaze under control. The fire did not destroy the house, though it likely won't be occupiable immediately, Edmond said. The fire department guessed the fire and smoke caused about $50,000 worth of damage. The family who lived in the house …
