Melt Owner Matt Fish: Mentor a Fantastic Community

Fish announced a new restaurant and discussed entrepreneurship at a Mentor Area Chamber Commerce event

It's been nearly four months since Melt Bar & Grilled opened a Mentor location, but a trip there still reveals a packed house on most nights. That's clearly not a problem for owner Matt Fish, who opened his first location in Lakewood about seven years ago. "It's been a great experience out here — I know I don't have to tell you guys how fantastic your community is," Fish told the audience at the Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon this week. "This is a community I was eyeballing for many years with our growth." The Chamber invited Fish to the luncheon to discuss restaurant entrepreneurship and how to make it a success. He shared the stage with Joe Longo, who announced that his family would open a new restaurant in Mentor later this …

GALLERY: Melt Opens Mentor Location

Check out a few images from Melt's newest restaurant

Mentor's newest, cheesiest restaurant opened Friday to a packed lunchtime crowd. Some people waited 30 minutes to be seated at Melt Bar & Grilled, but the anticipation of choosing from 36 gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches made it worth it. People like Mentor resident Jason Knotts were excited to have the restaurant in the city. "I like all the beers they have on tap," Knotts said. "I like the atmosphere and, obviously, the food. "They're hitting a big base around this area, I'm sure it's going to be packed all the time." Before Friday, Mentor residents had to drive to Cleveland Heights, Independence or Lakewood for Melt's popular grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers, fries and microbrews. Those who are new to Melt were ready to experience …

Mentor Melt Will Be Opening Nov. 2

Last week's fire will only cause a small delay for the gourmet grilled cheese maker

The bad news is the small fire in the Mentor Melt building last Thursday will delay the restaurant's opening. The good news is the delay will be a short one. The Melt in Mentor is slated to open Nov. 2. It was originally slated to open Oct. 15. "This small setback shouldn’t have a significant impact on our opening and we are currently working with the city of Mentor and the building inspectors to open the Mentor location on November 2, said Melt owner Matt Fish in a statement. "We know the Mentor community and our new Melt family members are anxious to get the doors open and so are we. So we want to send a huge thank you out to the Mentor Fire and Police Departments and other firefighters for their quick response, as well as to all of our …

Firefighters Douse Blaze At New Melt Restaurant In Mentor

The fire may delay the restaurant's opening

Firefighters doused a blaze Thursday at the site of the new Melt restaurant at the Points East shopping compex in Mentor. The fire began in the kitchen area at about 1:30 p.m., Mentor Fire Battalion Chief Kevin Edmond said. However, there was no cooking, only construction, occuring when the fire began. The fire spread through the duct work to the ceiling, causing smoke to come from the roof, but firefighters were able to contain the flames to the Melt unit in the shopping complex, Edmond said. Mentor, Kirtland and Willoughby Fire Departments responded to the fire, while firefighters from Grand River, Concord Township and Mentor-on-the-Lake covered Mentor's unmanned stations. Firefighters extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes, Edmond …

A split Commission also approved plans for the Red Wine & Brew tasting room and patio

The Commission unanimously approved Cleveland Clinic's request to rezone 47 acres at the southeast corner of Norton Parkway and Center Street from a "lifestyle center" designation to a "medical campus." A "medical campus" zone can be used for diverse reasons. It can include everything from physician's offices to a full medical center with a helicopter pad. Cleveland Clinic has been coy about its intentions regarding the property and continued to be so at the meeting. When Commission Member Katherine Cimperman asked Brian Smith, the director of …

So the CCF doesn't have to show the city the ideas they have for the area? You KNOW they have an idea of what they are putting there so why not make them share it with the city? Playing coy about the plans doesn't instill confidence in what they are going to do. This is across from a residential community.   more ›

Cleveland Clinic, Joseph Thomas & Deer Hunting: A Week In Review

Catch up on the biggest news stories of the week

1. This was a big news week in Mentor. A lot of long-simmering issues (both good and bad) came to the surface. For example, Cleveland Clinic has demonstrated an interest in developing on 47 acres in the Newell Creek. That could potentially be huge -- maybe even hundreds of jobs huge. After all, one does not simply acquire 47 acres to park cars. For now, the Clinic is being cautious about discussing its intentions. "We are currently in a due diligence process which could position us to acquire land in Mentor," said Heather Phillips, the director of corporate communications for the Clinic. "At this time, no specific decisions have been made regarding potential uses of the land. 2. The trial of Joseph Thomas -- the man accused of raping and …
