Check out some images from the city's tasty event, the Restaurant Showcase
The Mentor Restaurant Showcase returned Wednesday in a bigger and yummier fashion than last year's inaugural event. Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kevin Malecek worked with the city to secure a bigger space, the Mentor Civic Ice Arena, because he anticipated more guests. That turned out to be a good plan, as he estimated that about 200 people showed up. "It's going as well as we expected," he said during the event. "There's no excuse to leave here hungry." About 25 area restaurants participated, including:

Mentor VetsNet gives veterans 10 percent off goods upon showing identification
As Veteran's Day approaches, the Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce hopes to add businesses to its Mentor VetsNet discount program. The program features businesses who give a 10-percent discount to veterans, reserve, and active duty service members. More than 40 companies already participate in VetsNet. "Mentor VetsNet provides tangible recognition and gratitude for the service given by the men and women of our armed forces past and present," MACC President and CEO Kevin Malecek said in a statement. "It is a way to honor and support those who have given the their all to guarantee our freedom." A consumer must display his or her active duty or reserve identification or a membership card from the VFW, American Legion, AmVets or another veterans…

The program will provide discounts from the city of Mentor and local businesses for veterans and still serving members of the military
The city of Mentor and the Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce discussed its new Mentor Vets Net initiative during a work session Tuesday at City Hall. The program would offer discounts from the city and local businesses to veterans and people actively serving in the military. "We're looking for opportunities to say 'thanks' to the veterans who have served," Filipiak said. Filipiak added that the city has never had a program for active duty personnel or recently decommissioned members. For the city's part, Filipiak said he would like to offer military members and veterans the same discounts that seniors receive on Mentor Parks and Recreation programs and events. Meanwhile, MACC President Kevin Malecek said he has talked to several business in …

The city lost $34,402.66 overall on the It's Better In Mentor festival in 2011, according to a report City Manager Kenneth Filipiak gave to City Council Tuesday afternoon. That counts $14,000 the city spent on wages and another $23,000 it spent on overtime -- most of which went to public works employees, policemen and firemen. This is the first year the city of Mentor took employee expenses into account when considering how much it spends on the festival. "I think you'd find the numbers in 2011 would be similar to past years if we gathered the same information," Filipiak said. While neither the City Council nor administration want to stop supporting the 3-day festival, both groups are interested in finding ways to improve it and to get …

The Lake County Commissioners voted Tuesday to increase the county's sales tax from 6.25 percent to 6.75 percent. They also voted to reduce property taxes, as well as stormwater management fees. However, the latter reduction will not affect Mentor property owners because the city is not served by the county's stormwater program. This comes after Mentor Council had unanimously passed a resolution, asking the commissioners to delay their vote. City officials were concerned the sales tax increase would have a disproportionate affect on Mentor because 43 percent of the county's sales come from Mentor. They asked the commissioners to delay their vote until council members could discuss the topic further with them. However, the commissioners …

Mentor City Council passed a resolution Tuesday night, asking the Lake County Commissioners to delay their planned vote that would increase the county's sales tax from 6.25 percent to 6.75 percent. "In reviewing the proposed increase, we are concerned there may be a disproportionate impact on Mentor because of the large amount of retail in the city," Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said. Ron Traub, the city's director of economic development, said 43 percent of the county's sales come from Mentor. The Council unanimously passed a resolution that said, "There is concern that a significant increase in the sales tax rate will have a negative impact on sales volume with the city and county at large at a time when the local economy is …

After 17 years as its president and CEO, Marie Pucak offered her final farewell to the Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce during its monthly meeting Tuesday at LaMalfa Centre. "It's just so hard to put into words the gratitude I have," she said. "I even have a scholarship with my name on it. My principal would be so proud." Pucak is leaving for Michigan with her family. Her husband received what she jokingly calls a "BFP," a big fat promotion. Unfortunately, the promotion requires them to move. She thanked everyone and said she would suffer "monster Mentor Chamber withdrawal" once she arrives in Michigan. "I have so many thank-you cards to write; but, for now, I just want to tell you all publicly one last time how grateful I am." Chamber …

The Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce announced during its monthly meeting Tuesday at LaMalfa Centre that its new president will be Kevin Malecek. Malecek will fill the vacancy created by current President Marie Pucak when she leaves the chamber this Thursday after 17 years. Jessie Baginski headed the search committee to find Pucak's successor. She said that of 24 candidates, the committee voted "unanimously and enthusiastically" for Malecek. "We're not trying to replace Marie. We're trying to build off what she built," Baginski said. Malecek is the director of the Evening and Saturday MBA program at Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management. He is also on the board of directors for Laketran and the Willoughby Hills …

This was a fun and relaxing event, and you certainly get your moneys worth of food, plus two drink tickets/person! My husband and I shared a little bit of everything so we could try it all (taking a break in between to let our stomachs settle). We didn't realize this event was held last year: someone sitting with us informed us of that. We would have attended last year if we'd known about it. We …   more ›
