The junior will play for the Bobcats in 2014.
Another standout from Mentor's junior class has already decided where he will play football in 2014. Kent Berger announced last week that he will play for Ohio University. Both Brandon Fritts and former Mentor quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who left for UNC in January, have decided to play at North Carolina. “Proud to say I committed to Ohio University and couldn't be more excited. Can't wait to be a bobcat!” the junior tweeted last week. “Thanks to everyone for all the support and congratulations really appreciate it,” he wrote a few hours later. Berger, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound junior, carries a 4.0 grade point average and hopes to major in marketing or engineering, according to OhioVarsity.com. “I loved the coaching staff," Berger told Ohio …

The Associated Press of Ohio singled out several Cardinals and Cougars for individual honors
While Mentor High quarterback Mitch Trubisky has garnered well-deserved spotlight for winning Mr. Football and offensive player of the year, he is far from the only Mentor athlete to be honored by the Associated Press of Ohio. Trubisky's teammate Brandon Fritts received first-team, all-state honors. Fritts caught 73 passes for 1,244 yards and 17 touchdowns. Fellow Cardinals receiver Conner Krizancic and defensive lineman Kent Berger received special mentions. Krizancic caught 79 passes for 1,144 and 12 touchdowns. Meanwhile, Berger led a young defensive squad through the regular season and playoffs. Two Lake Catholic Cougars were also named to the first team All Ohio. Offensive lineman Evan Grosel was named all state first team after …

Cardinals top Twinsburg Tigers 41-0
The story for the entire season has been the Mentor Cardinals' offense, specifically North Carolina recruit Mitch Trubisky and his cadre of talented receivers. And for most of the season the Cardinals' defense said they were underrated. Well, the defense guaranteed Mentor (9-1) would be the NEO Conference Valley Division champions by shutting out a talented Twinsburg Tigers team (6-4) Friday night at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium. The Tigers, who do have playmakers including quarterback Jalen Washington and running back Tyrone McGuinea, could not generate any momentum against the Cardinals staunch defense. Mentor sacked the Tigers five times, costing Twinsburg a total of 52 yards, and intercepted them twice. "They played really hard on defense…

Cardinals blow open what was a tight season opener in the third quarter
Euclid scored first against Mentor Friday night. In fact, Mentor quarterback Mitch Trubisky was sacked three times and intercepted twice before he first put the Cardinals on the board with a 6-yard run with eight minutes left in the second quarter. But, after that, it was pretty much all Mentor. Mentor scored an unanswered 33 points en route to a 33-13 rout at Jerome T. Osborne stadium. "They came at us a little bit," Mentor Head Coach Steve Trivisonno said. "Then we settled down and started playing football." Euclid played tough in the first quarter. Terrance Roscoe grabbed a pass from wide receiver LaShaun Moore for an interception, which gave the Panthers the ball at Mentor's 47. Euclid capitalized when Rakeesh Nolden caught a touchdown…

A smaller, faster, more focused football team prepares for the new season
December 1, 2012. You may not know the significance of that date yet but everybody on the Mentor High School football team does. It's the day of the state championship and every Mentor Cardinals' season is an arrow pointing to that day. Last year, the Cardinals fell short of their ultimate goal -- to win the championship. Despite a high-powered offense that shredded several school goals and a defense that featured a trio of D-I recruits, they were beaten in the Region 1 final by St. Ignatius -- a team they had beaten in the regular season. But none of that will matter when the Cardinals kick off their new season against the Euclid Panthers on Aug. 24. A new season means an empty slate and the same high expectations with the same arrow …
