City Council approved about $970,000 in contracts for the repair program
Orange barrel season will soon be in full swing, and two Northeast Ohio firms will take care of the work in Mentor. City Council on Tuesday approved three contracts for two firms — Stow-based Karvo Paving Co. and A & J Cement Contractors of Euclid. The three contracts, collectively worth about $970,000, are part of a larger construction season that will cost the city about $1.8 million, City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said. Mentor will pay Karvo $709,268.80 to provide asphalt pavement resurfacing on a combined 3.5 miles of the following streets: Karvo's second contract, for $67,285.10, is a change order for paving Clearair Drive. The city of Mentor received permission from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to begin culling deer Friday. And the city -- using Mentor police officers as sharpshooters -- may begin culling as soon as Tuesday in Morton Park, Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said. The city has permission to cull 150 deer between now and March 31. It intends to focus its efforts on five specific properties within Mentor: Morton Park, Mentor Lagoons, Veterans Park, Black Brook Golf Course and the city-owned property around City Hall. Filipiak said the city has been awaiting approval from ODNR and is ready to begin culling the deer population in Mentor. "We have been ready to go for quite some time," he said. Filipiak added that city could receive …

Mentor City Council voted in favor of an agreement during its meeting Tuesday night that will allow it to share public works equipment with Painesville, Painesville Township and Madison. The pact is part of a pilot program for the state of Ohio and it leaves room for other municipalities in Lake County, as well as the county engineer's office, to join. In addition to loaning out its public works equipment, this means the city of Mentor could also receive additional help from neighboring communities in time of need, Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said. "We can choose to participate at whatever level we see fit," Filipiak said to Council. He added that the agreement was "very open ended." "We have a structure in place to allow us to …

The Cleveland Clinic's interest in Mentor may extend beyond the physicians' offices it will be opening soon on Wayside Drive. The Clinic has requested that 47 acres at the southeast corner of Norton Parkway and Center Street be rezoned from a "lifestyle center" designation to a "medical campus." The item is on the Planning Commission's agenda for its meeting this upcoming Thursday at Mentor City Hall. "We are currently in a due diligence process which could position us to acquire land in Mentor," said Heather Phillips, the director of corporate communications for the Clinic. "At this time, no specific decisions have been made regarding potential uses of the land. We look forward to the City Planning Commission’s review later this month." A…

The city suggests legalizing bow hunting in certain parts of Mentor
Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak presented an ordinance to City Council Monday night that would, if passed, legalize the bow hunting of deer in Mentor. The deer population has been a popular and occasionally divisive subject in the city for awhile. Earlier this year, Council gave the city administration permission to pursue the permits needed to get a Deer Management Plan approved by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. This latest ordinance is only part of the city's ultimate plan and not its totality, Filipiak explained. "This is our first step in reducing the deer population in the city," Filipiak said. Council did not vote on the ordinance Monday night. Instead, they will discuss it more during a work session before their next…

The people behind the community garden at Wildwood Cultural Center "broke soil" Wednesday morning
The three organizations behind Mentor's community garden -- the city of Mentor, Lake County General Health District and Kaiser Permanente -- gathered Wednesday morning at Wildwood Cultural Center to open their joint project. They planted a trio of tomato plants to officially open the city's first community garden. The garden was the idea of Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak. However, it took a grant from Kaiser Permanente, for which LCGHD Health Educator Tori Sinclair wrote the application, to make it happen. Kaiser Permanente pediatrician Dr. Andrea Zets said the garden symbolized what Kaiser stood for -- staying health through prevention and proactiveness. "The family can come out here together, garden, get some exercise and breathe …

Council members discuss whether such an ordinance would be necessary
Mentor City Council and administration discussed the possibility of amending the city's noise ordinance so it addressed ATVs, dirt bikes and similar vehicles during a work session Tuesday at City Hall. While no final decisions were made Tuesday, City Manager Kenneth Filipiak wanted to gauge the council members' opinions on the topic. Filipiak said that while the city does not get a lot of complaints about ATVs and other small vehicles, those who do call about it tend to be very frustrated. "We receive these complaints on a regular basis," he said. "We've been frustrated over the years because we don't have a great way to address them." While the city code does not allow people to drive motor scooters, ATVs and the like on Mentor streets, …
