WATCH: Mitch Trubisky Wins High School Athlete of the Year Award

The recent Mentor graduate beat out another Cardinal, Justin Fritts, at the 2012 Greater Cleveland Sports Awards.

Mitch Trubisky has already graduated from Mentor High School and he's still winning awards. Trubisky was named the High School Athlete of the Year at the 2012 Greater Cleveland Sports Awards in Cleveland Thursday night. One of the best quarterbacks Mentor has seen in a while, Trubisky beat out Kirtland High School's Damon Washington and a fellow Mentor Cardinal, Justin Fritts. Because Trubisky has already started classes at the University of North Carolina, he wasn't able to attend Thursday's ceremony. He did film a short video clip for an acceptance speech. He is Greater Cleveland's all-time career passing leader with 9,126 yards and 92 touchdowns. He also finished with 1,560 career rushing yards and 33 rushing touchdowns. Mentor was 30-8…

Cougars, Cardinals & Bobcats Basketball: A Week In Review

The schools in Mentor ball so hard

1. Three local basketball teams made the news this week. Lake Catholic's boys basketball team made the final four for the first time in its history. Unfortunately, they fell to unbeaten juggernaut Dunbar Friday morning; but that doesn't negate the incredible season they had. 2. Meanwhile, Mentor senior swingman Justin Fritts was named the best high school basketball player in Ohio. Fritts is the first Cardinal ever to be voted Mr. Basketball by the Ohio AP and the first guy from Northeast Ohio to receive the distinction since LeBron James. Fritts averaged 28.1 points, eight rebounds, 3.7 steals and 2.9 assists per game and was the leader of a Cardinals team that went 22-3 and advanced to the Div. 1 regional tournament. 3. The Broadmoor …

Justin Fritts' Late Heroics Lead Mentor Boys Basketball Team To Regionals

Fritts' late layups rally Cardinals over Arcs to advance in playoffs

Great players aren’t always great; they’re just great when they have to be. Mentor’s senior leading scorer Justin Fritts was having a lousy evening with just one three-pointer against Brush that often left the Cardinals in a precarious position during the Division I district final Saturday night at Euclid High School. The Arcs held an 11-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Mentor made its move and caught up as Fritts dispensed with the long-range shooting for which he is known and simply went for the goal. Scoring seven of Mentor’s final 11 points on three layups and a foul shot, Fritts sent the Cardinals to a return trip to the regional tournament with a 76-72 victory over Brush, beating the Arcs for the fourth straight …

The Cardinals will play Lyndhurst Brush 7 p.m. Saturday for the district championship in Euclid. Meanwhile, Lake Catholic beat University School 54-52 Thursday. The game was not always as close as its ending. The Cougars never trailed and led by as much as 11, but the game still came down to a final missed three by …

Justin Fritts' 44 Sparks Win Over Garfield Heights

Cardinals win regional final rematch over Bulldogs

Mentor star guard Justin Fritts had an unmistakable look in his eyes that spoke plainly to all who witnessed his dominance Friday night: Garfield Heights had to go down. Fritts drew a bead on the team that ended the Cardinals’ run last season one round short of the Division I Final Four and dropped a load on them scoring a career-high 44 points and snaring eight rebounds in a 73-63 home victory. The senior called it the best game of his career in the Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division matchup between two teams ranked among the Associated Press’ Top 10 in the state with Mentor (9-1, 4-0 NOC) ranked eighth and Garfield Heights (8-2, 3-1) ninth.
