Mentor Names Headliner For Mentor CityFest

Beatles tribute band BritBeat and Cleveland's Disco Inferno will be rocking the stage at the new Mentor festival

The city of Mentor wanted something classic and timeless as their headlining performer during the new Mentor CityFest. And, also, it had to fit within their budget. "Finding the entertainment has been the biggest piece of the puzzle," said Jill Korsok, of the Mentor Parks and Recreation Department. "It took quite awhile to find what we were looing for that would appeal to everybody and fit our budget." And what did they decide on that was both timeless and affordable? The music of the Beatles. A Chicago-based Beatles tribute band, BritBeat, will perform a concert at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium on Aug. 24 -- the second and final night of the festival. After the concert, there will a fireworks show. (To be clear, this show is not replacing the…

City Offers New Details On Revamped Mentor Festival

The city is looking to anchor the new event with a big concert

What do you think about Huey Lewis and the News performing in Mentor? How about Peter Frampton? The city of Mentor wants to have a big concert at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium on the second day of its revamped It's Better In Mentor Festival and those are just two names the city is giving serious consideration. The festival, which will almost certainly be renamed, is scheduled for Aug. 23 and 24, 2013, (a Friday and Saturday) with some events, including a revamped Taste Of Mentor, scheduled for the following day. The festival is also intended as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Mentor's incorporation as a city, City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said during a work session with City Council Tuesday afternoon. As per the concert, Filipiak said…

Video: Parade Marches in the Good Times for It’s Better in Mentor Festival

Residents line street for local tradition

Gloomy clouds and a polite touch of rain greeted the annual It’s Better in Mentor Festival Parade on Saturday morning, but nothing could quite dampen the revelers’ spirits. Undoubtedly, many of the parade’s Halloween-styled entrants enjoyed the weather’s foreshadowing of the upcoming holiday, but the kids grabbed candy just as hungrily as if it had been a sunny day. And for those who can’t quite get enough of the political season, there were plenty of local electoral hopefuls on the scene meeting and greeting those dotting the sidewalk. Parade organizers handed out awards for several float categories including Best of Show (Mentor High School Band), Community Organization (Mentor Public Library), Antique Vehicle (Cleveland Institute of …

It's Better in Mentor Festival Kicks Off

Plenty of kids, parents have fun at annual event

People had a bit of a tough choice on Friday night. Watch the Lake Catholic Cougars take on defending Division III state champion Cardinal Mooney in a football game at Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium or go to the nearby fairgrounds for the It’s Better in Mentor Festival. Well, no matter which event you selected, plenty of fun was had by all. The Cougars won a two-overtime thriller, 24-21, and the glitter of the festival still played into the night after the ballgame was over. Here are some images from the festival.

I take my children to 2 festivals a year. St Johns because the childrens games are cheap and they always win a prize. Then we would take them to better in mentor for the rides. This is sad to me. Now i will have to find a different fair to take the kids to for rides. I never attend the lake county fair, I think there are too many drunk people walking around that one. Big Changes Coming For 'It's Better In Mentor' Festival

The carnival rides and late September date are out; city looks to replace them with emphasis on neighborhoods, local businesses and community building

The It's Better In Mentor Festival will look very different next year, said Bob Martin, the city's director of Parks and Recreation. It will be in a slightly different location, shorter, held in the summer as opposed to early fall and, most importantly, it will have a different focus. "We're looking to make this truly a community-focused event," Martin said. To that end, the city is ditching the carnival rides, even though the rides have traditionally been the festival's biggest money makers. Instead, the city hopes to focus on the things that truly make Mentor different from other communities. So instead of inviting the usual cavalcade of carnival games into town, all the games will be run by local PTAs, churches, student groups and other…

Here's your chance to catch up on some of the big stories from this week

1. Mentor Police helped crack an auto theft ring that was stealing vehicles from Lake, Summit and Cuyahoga counties. The ring seemed to specialize in seasonal equipment, police said, taking motorcycles and landscaping gear in the summer and snow plows in the winter. Thus far, the police have arrested two people and raided a chop shop but more arrests may be forthcoming. 2. Mentor City Council and administration previously discussed revamping the city's annual festival, It's Better In Mentor. However, it looks like any major revamping will not be instituted until 2013. "I think, from our point of view, if you're talking about any change in the format, we're looking at 2013," Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said. He added that meant the…
