Bow Ties, Rainbow Trout & Reefer Madness: Listening To Local Voices

See what Mentor Patch bloggers had on their minds this week

1. Is Ohio ready to legalize marijuana? That was the question poised by Mentor Patch blogger/attorney Bill Joherl in his most recent post. Personally, Joherl preferred to keep it illegal. However, some of his readers felt differently. "It’s funny to me that most medicines are created from plants (found in the rain forest amongst other places) and people have no problem with them because they are processed by scientist and given out in droves," Laura wrote. "Marijuana is no different, I think it is getting a bad rap because it was utilized for pleasure before it was utilized for health issues." What do you think? Join the conversation here. 2. Shawn VanHuss has had a busy week. The hunter/outdoorsman/blogger/all-around-nice-guy wrote three …

Sandra Fluke, Classic Cars & Nostalgia For Outdoorsmen: Listening to Local Voices

See what bloggers on Mentor Patch had to say this week

1. There's been a lot of talk about Sandra Fluke and Rush Limbaugh in the news lately. A question that's been asked a lot -- "Could Fluke sue Limbaugh? Should she?" Sure, she could sue; but, in the opinion of attorney/Patch blogger Dennis Spirgen, it wouldn't be successful. Spirgen thinks that Fluke's decision to testify before Congress made her a public figure. Furthermore, it is much more difficult to prove someone slandered a public, as opposed to private, figure. "American society expects public figures to accept much harsher criticism and even abuse as part of the price for being given power and influence," Spirgen writes. Read more of Spirgen's opinion on his blog. 2. Nostalgia tends to be blinding. We all fall into the trap of …

Hunting, Homes, Health & Republicans: Listening to Local Voices

See what bloggers from Mentor Patch had to say this week

1. Life comes with a lot of rules -- many of which we take for granted. Don't cut in line. Wait 20 minutes after eating before you swim. Don't shoplift. The reason for many of these rules seem obvious. However, a few seem arbitrary. For example, while hunting, a person can only have three shells in their shotgun unless his or her weapon is outfitted with a special plug. Shawn VanHuss -- Mentor resident, father, avid outdoorsman and outstanding blogger -- decided to ask "Why?" The answer isn't short but, I promise, it's interesting. 2. Maintaining a healthy diet can feel like a lonely path -- especially if your dietary plan is not easily described in one word, i.e.: vegan, vegetarian, paleo. But it's helpful -- maybe even mandatory -- that …
