The girls took on Wickliffe on Feb. 14 and won by more than 300 pins.
The Mentor High girls bowling team celebrated Valentine's Day with a big win over Wickliffe, 3,683 to 3,369, according to the News Herald. "As a team, they helped each other well today," Mentor coach Mike Phillips told the News Herald. "I've got great expectations. I expect the girls to make state." The Mentor boys team also played Thursday, but lost to Fairport by more than 240 pins, the Herald reports. Earlier this season, the boys team finished with a score of 4,481 defeating then second place Fairport, who scored 4,267 total pins. The girls team finished with a score of 3,437, topping second place Wickliffe at 3285 pins.

Celebrate a successful winter season with the Mentor High athletes
Mentor High celebrated its winter sports athletes during its seasonal award ceremony Monday night and they had a lot to celebrate. They recognized: The boys basketball team and cheerleaders did not attend the award ceremony because their seasons have not ended. Athletic Director Jeff Cassella thanked all the student-athletes for a great season. "I challenged you to be the best you could be on and off the field and you did that," Cassella said. The Board of Education will meet 7 p.m. today at Mentor High School
The Mentor Schools Board of Education is meeting 7 p.m. today in the Lecture Room A in Mentor High School. The Board and the district's administration will celebrate the accomplishments of several of their students at the meeting, including: Once again, the meeting will be at the high school instead of the board office to accommodate the many students whose activities will be celebrated tonight.

Athletes from Mentor High and Lake Catholic were all over the podium this weekend
Athletes from Mentor High and Lake Catholic made the region proud this weekend as thet excelled in sports as diverse as wrestling, bowling and gymnastics. Sophomore Anthony Tutolo lead the charge. He was second in his weight class (113,) his only loss was to Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy wrestler Nathan Tomasello in the state finals. Teammate Jimmy Szep (195) placed third and Sean Fee (126) and Brad Taton (106) were sixth and eighth, respectively, in their classes. Kevin Oravecz is the runner-up at state; Mentor High team places third overall
Last year, as a junior, Kevin Oravecz became the first bowler in the Mentor High School's history to compete at a state championship. He finished 31st out of the 100 best high school bowlers in Ohio. This year both he and his team did even better. Oravecz bowled a 699 in the individual competition -- the second best in the state. He only trailed the overall champion by three pins, according to cleveland.com. However, Oravecz was more interested in helping his team win than in individual accolades. "The only thing I was thinking about was helping my team try to win the title," he told The News-Herald. Overall, the Mentor High boys team did very well. Wrestlers, gymnasts & bowlers go to states; boys and girls basketball playoffs continue
This weekend is the culmination for what many high school athletes in winter sports have been working toward all season. Wrestlers, gymnasts and bowlers all have their state championshipsswimmers had their state championship last week -- and many athletes from schools in Mentor will be competing. Mentor swimmer, bowlers, gymnasts and wrestlers earned a spot at state championship
Mentor High athletes once again rose to the challenge while competing at their respective district and state championships this past weekend. Two earned a spot at the state championship this weekend in Columbus. Both qualifiers, Jordan Victor and Colin Kramer, were third place in their respective weight classes. Warren Ashton also qualified as an alternate for state. The girls were led by Kayla Kosmerl, who was the all-around champion -- a title she also earned at regionals. Mentor athletes will compete this weekend with a slot at states on the line
The ante has been upped. Mentor High Cardinals on the wrestling, bowling, gymnastics and swimming teams all performed well enough at districts to earn a shot at sectionals. Now they will need to do the same this weekend to earn a spot at their respective state championships. Look for these highlights from the Cardinals this weekend: They will face off against Chardon at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Perry. Tickets are available at the athletic office. Mentor bowlers, wrestlers and gymnasts moving on to district meet
Mentor High athletes from several teams rose to the occasion during a weekend when many of them competed at sectional meets. As a freshman, Coy has already set several school records in swimming. The top four teams at districts will qualify for the state meet the following weekend. Kayla Kosmerl was especially impressive at sectionals, winning the all-around competition as the meets top gymnast.

This is an important weekend for Mentor High athletics, as the gymnastics, wrestling, hockey, swim and basketball teams all have pivotal games or tournaments coming up. The Bulldogs and Cardinals have been trading heavyweight hits the last two times they met. Garfield may have knocked the Cardinals out of the playoffs last year but Mentor won the rematch earlier this season. The boys basketball team ends its regular season next Friday at Brunswick. A win against either Garfield Heights or Brunswick will clinch a share of the NOC Valley Division title and a win at both will win the championship outright.
