The former elementary school houses the Cardinal Autism Resource Education School, which Hoynes initiated during her tenure as superintendent
The Mentor Schools Board of Education renamed the former Headlands Elementary building as the Dr. Jacqueline A. Hoynes School in honor of the district's erstwhile superintendent Tuesday evening. Several school officials thanked Hoynes for her decades of service with the district during a brief ceremony before the School Board meeting. "One of (Hoynes') strongest characteristics is that she was willing to make the tough decisions that other superintendents in other districts wouldn't," Board President Alan Mihok said. Mihok cited Hoynes' willingness to close Center Street School and then Headlands Elementary -- due to the district's shrinking student population -- as difficult and unpopular, but ultimately correct, decisions she made. Mihok…

The Mentor Public School District closed one school in the spring and opened a new one in the fall
This was a year of big changes for the Mentor Schools District. It closed Headlands Elementary in Spring because of a shrinking school budget and aging population that no longer needs as many elementary schools. The district then renovated the building and reopened it with an entirely new purpose three months later. The Cardinal Autism Resource and Education School is a state-of-the-art facility for students with autism. CARES opened with nine students in two age groups: first through third grade and high school. LaPaglia plans to have 12 by January but it could be more if there's sufficient interest. The district intends to increase the number of students each school year until it reaches 42 in 2014. They will range in age from …

See the renovations taking place at the former Headlands Elementary School
The Cardinal Autism Resource and Education School, the Mentor school specialized to help students with autism, is on schedule to open October 1. Its first class will consist of 12 students – six students in the class for third through fifth grade, six more who are high school-aged, according to Mentor Schools Superintendent Jacqueline Hoynes. During the next three years, the school will add three more classes: prekindergarten; kindergarten through second grade; and sixth through eighth grade. The goal is for the schools to have 42 students by 2014. Some of those students will be from outside the Mentor Schools district. In the future, the district also hopes to have physical, occupational and speech therapy sessions for children after …

Catch Up on All The News You May Have Missed This Week
Busy week doesn't begin to describe it. So much happened in the last seven days, I feel as if I could write "15 Things You May Have Missed This Week." 1. Unfortunately, we have to begin with sad news. Robert Dilgren -- a retired Mentor firefighter and former Fairport Harbor police chief -- passed away this week. Dilgren, an experienced kayaker, was kayaking on Lake Erie near the Mentor Headlands neighborhood when he fell out of his vessel. Two good Samaritans, Timothy Gooding and Mark Humensky, brought him to shore and gave him CPR after Dilgren lost consciousness. Despite their best efforts, both they and the paramedics were unable to save Dilgren. He passed away Wednesday in the Cleveland Clinic. Authorities think a cardiac problem …

Renovations could begin as early as next week
Mentor Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to renovate the recently closed Headlands Elementary School into a school for children with autism. They approved the business plan for the new Cardinal Autism Resource and Education School during a meeting Tuesday. Superintendent Jacqueline Hoynes presented the idea to the Board during its May meeting. "With the school closing, we feel we have the opportunity to renovate the building to make it a state-of-the-art facility for students with autism," Hoynes said while proposing the project. According to the approved business plan, CARES will open October 2011 with enrollment of up to 12 students. Enrollment would then increase each year until there were 42 students by 2014. The renovated …

Headlands bid its students a fond farewell before closing its doors for good
Headlands has a tradition in which the fifth-graders are offered a round of applause from their teachers, parents and fellow students as they exit the school for the final time. However, because the school will be closing, the teachers added a twist to the tradition this year. After the fifth-graders received their ovation Monday afternoon, the entire school body exited the school in a conga line. See more memories from Headlands this year:

See the history of Headlands Elementary in Photos
After 56 years of fun and education, Headlands Elementary School will close on June 13. The building's future is still undecided. Superintendent Jacqueline Hoynes has recommended using it as an Autism Education Center. Alumni, teachers and parents have held events throughout the year to commemorate the school and those who have passed through its halls. And now see the history of the school in photos from its own archives. (Feel free to add your own photos, also.)

Students and their parents talk about their favorite times at the closing elementary school
Principals and teachers have had their turns. Now it's time for the students of Headlands Elementary School and their parents to share their favorite memories from the school. Headlands is scheduled to close at the end of the school year. Earlier this week, Superintendent Jacqueline Hoynes discussed the possibility of converting the school into an autism and education resource center. In the meantime, students, teachers, parents and anyone else who ever walked Headlands' halls was invited back for a farewell alumni night, where Mentor Patch asked people to share their favorite recollections about the school.

Jackie Hoynes was an administrator who managed by intimidation and although she helped get the schools back on their feet financially spent money she didn't have and issued edicts that caused alot of stress throughout the school system. I am so fed up with people praising someone who doesn't deserve it. Let's face it she was in the right place at the right time otherwise she would have never been…   more ›
