If there was a buzzword at Mentor's 70-53 win over Chardon, an out-of-county rival, it was execution. Steve Thompson, Mentor's passionate coach, drilled it into his Cardinals' head. Hounshell, Lake Catholic Prevail Over Mentor in Crosstown Rivalry

Senior leads way for Lake Catholic girls' basketball with 17 points and 11 rebounds

A year removed from an ACL injury that robbed her of her junior season, Lake Catholic forward Colette Hounshell says she’s feeling better than ever. The rest of the Lake girls' basketball team looks pretty solid too. The Cougars crashed the glass and dominated the paint to fend off visiting crosstown rival Mentor, 54-38, on Wednesday night. With the win, Lake improved to 9-1 at the halfway point of its regular season. The Cardinals stayed within striking distance until late in the fourth quarter, but Lake’s imposing size in the post ultimately sent Mentor (3-8) to its sixth straight loss. “I thought it was a closer game than the score indicated,” Mentor coach Steve Thompson said. “We really got beat on their offensive board.
