Apollo will receive nearly $71,000 in seven years for choosing Mentor. The company expects to pay $257,440 in new payroll taxes to Mentor during the time period. Fredon Corp. Settling into New Headquarters

The building sits on 11 acres of land where nearly 90 employees make helicopter parts and more

Roger Sustar has experienced some good and bad in the short time since his Fredon Corp. staff relocated to 8990 Tyler Blvd. Shortly after beginning the transition from Enterprise Drive, his new headquarters suffered a cracked floor from trying to move in a 42,000-pound horizontal milling machine on a 50,000 pound tow motor. Just weeks after he began incorporating offices into the new building, rain seeped inside as Superstorm Sandy hit Northeast Ohio. All of that accompanied Sustar's wife declaring him "freaking nuts" for taking on — and paying for — such an expansive project. He didn't exactly disagree with her, but the entrepreneur would have it no other way. "This is unbelievable," he said. "This is a huge endeavor … we're having one …

Mentor Students, Businesses Combine Forces at RoboBots

Nearly half of the 24 teams who competed Saturday were sponsored by Mentor manufacturers.

Kenny Neely had little to say Saturday about RoboBots, the event he had just participated in at Lakeland Community College. Instead, the Mentor High School senior shifted his focus to a May 12 grudge match in which his team of robot creators will strive for a better showing. An early exit from a tournament like the 24-team RoboBots can do that to you. "We'll start working again, rebuilding, looking at our flaws and how we can get better," Neely said of his team's "Wildcard" robot that bowed out of the competition early because of various electrical issues. RoboBots organizers are well aware of the competitive fuel the event sparked within area schools. In just its second year, RoboBots has grown from 10 teams mostly from Lake County, to …

Fredon Corp. Keeps Expanding

Mentor company makes essential parts for military, industrial and commercial products that keep us safe, keep us moving and keep us healthy

When Fredon Corp. celebrated its 41st anniversary last year, it was named to Inc. magazine’s list of the 5,000 fastest-growing small businesses in the U.S. The national magazine noted the Mentor company increased revenue from $9.2 million in 2006 to nearly $12 million in 2009. Not too shabby when you consider Fredon’s co-founder, Roger Sustar, started the company with a $7,000 loan. Fredon manufactures thousands of precision-machined parts and assemblies for military defense contractors like Boeing and Northrop Grumman that make missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles, for diversified industrial giants like General Electric that manufactures locomotive train engines, and for medical device companies like Mentor-based Steris that produces …
