The Mentor Fire Department will be collecting donations during its 18th Feed The Needy Food Drive this weekend at Great Lakes Mall. From 4 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the firefighters -- along with their ladder truck -- will be stationed by the mall's northeast entrance near Max & Erma's restaurant. They will be accepting food and cash donations. Money will be used to buy groceries from Giant Eagle that, along with the donated food, will be given to the United Way of Lake County. The United Way will then distribute the food to as many local food banks as possible. In the last 18 years, this food drive has collected more than $100,000 worth of food that has gone to families who need it.

Mentor Public Library patrons donated 25 boxes worth of canned goods -- which is about 625 pounds -- during its annual Can Your Fines food drive in November. During the drive, patrons received a dollar off any fines on their library card for each canned good they brought in. “We appreciate the generosity of the surrounding community to help people in need,” said the library's Circulation Manager Denise Wright. The donations went to local food banks -- St. Gabriel and St. John Vianney food pantries.

The National Association of Letter Carriers are having their annual food drive today (May 12.) This means that if someone leaves canned goods by their mailboxes, Lake County letter carriers will pick them up and donate them to local food banks. All the food collected in Lake County stays in the county. This is the largest 1-day food drive in the country. More than 70 million pounds of food was collected last year. In Lake County, they collected a little more than 100,000 pounds of food last year.
