Mentor students collect thousands of pounds of food for United Way of Lake County's annual food drive
Mentor High School showed its support for United Way's Feed Lake County Drive by collecting thousands of pounds of food for people who need it. The students capped their weeklong food drive by packing up their donation and shipping them out Friday. United Way of Lake County's annual collection effort will help fill cupboards for 51 area food banks. Though the UWLC did not know exactly how much was donated Friday, last year Mentor High School gave 12,000 pounds and the school district, as a whole, donated 20,000. "We're proud of the kids for supporing the community that supports them," said Kristen Kirby, a spokeswoman for Mentor Schools. Feed Lake County kicked off this year with a sculpture contest at Great Lakes Mall. Companies donated …

Three sculptures made of canned vegetables, boxed pasta and other nonperishable foods stand in the concourse by the Dillard's women's store in Great Lakes Mall. Three local businesses -- Marous Brothers, Winter Equipment and Avery Dennison -- donated 4,533 pounds of food to the drive. Then they used them to build the food structures that are in the mall. The works of art (and charity) will stand as reminders until the end of month. More than 45 companies have already signed to hold their own food drives, United Way of Lake County President Deborah Foley said. The …

United Way of Lake County handed out 620 turkeys to 50 local food pantries and residential facilities Monday morning. The turkeys were purchased from Giant Eagle with money from the Feed Lake County food drive. The drive raised more about 45,500 pounds of food and more than $60,000 in cash. The money is used throughout the year to purchase food for pantries in September, November and December. Most of the food donations from Feed Lake County were distributed to food pantries in April as part of the second annual Food Parade. United Way of Lake County will make another purchase in December, in time for Christmas. Honda of Mentor also participated in Monday’s distribution, dropping off a vehicle full of nonperishable items for the food …

Usually the United Way of Lake County waits until the third week of September to distribute food to local pantries. However, this year the pantries could not wait, United Way employee Gayle Sikula said. "We moved it up because pantries were calling, saying they were in need of food," she said. The local chapter distributed more than $9,000 worth of food to 51 local food pantries, including 10 in Mentor, on Wednesday. The donated food consisted of staples – peanut butter, jelly, tuna, noodles, spaghetti sauce, fruit cocktails and fruit juice. The United Way of Lake County paid for it with donations collected during the Feed Lake County drive. Overall, the 2011 Feed Lake County Campaign raised approximately 45,500 pounds of food and $60,000 …
