United Way Wants To Fill Bus With Food Donations To Feed Lake County

The United Way of Lake County's annual food drive ends this Saturday and more help is still needed

The United Way of Lake County's Feed Lake County usually raises about 50,000 pounds of food and $50,000 in donations each campaign. However, this year, donations are down as the need continues to rise. Consequently, the United Way is holding a final food drive from 8 a.m. to noon this Saturday. Laketran is parking an empty bus outside of Willoughby City Hall during the city's Eco-Flea Market day and United Way of Lake County is encouraging residents to bring food items to fill the bus. People who donate food Saturday will be entered into a WELW raffle that offersprizes of restaurant certificates, as well as tickets to the movies and Captains games. United Way Of Lake County Donates More Than 700 Hams As Part Of Feed Lake County Drive

The hams went to 48 local food pantries who, in turn, will distribute them to families in need

The United Way of Lake County distributed 704 hams to 48 food pantries across the county earlier. The hams will then be given to families in need in time for Easter. Local food pantries continue to see an increase in clients who are in need of food as 2-1-1 reported more than 4,200 requests for food in 2012, which was up from 3,600 calls in 2011, according to the United Way. So far in 2013, there have been 865 calls for food, which is up from 516 calls between January and March of 2012. "We get calls from people who do not ordinarily go to the food pantry every month but for a special event they desperately need some additional help," said Joanne Ramsey from the Willoughby United Methodist Church. Mentor Firefighters Collect More than $7,800 Worth Of Food For The Needy

The food was given to the United Way of Lake County Friday, who will distribute it to local pantries

On Friday, firefighters from the Mentor Fire Department donated more than $7,800 worth to the United Way of Lake County. The United Way will, in turn, distribute it to local pantries that need restocking. Most of the money was collected during the firefighters' annual Feed The Needy Food Drive last December at Great Lakes Mall. In the last 18 years, this food drive has collected more than $100,000 worth of food that has gone to families who need it. Likewise, the United Way of Lake County will be kicking off its annual Feed Lake County Drive on March 1 at Great Lakes Mall. United Way Of Lake County Distributes Food To 51 Local Food Banks

The local chapter of the United Way handed out $20,000 worth of food Thursday

On Thursday, United Way of Lake County distributed $20,000 worth of food to 51 food pantries and residential facilities across the county as part of its 2012 Feed Lake County Campaign. Eleven of the pantries to receive donations are headquartered in Mentor. Overall, the 2012 Feed Lake County Campaign raised about 45,188 pounds of food and $62,000 in cash. Cash donations to Feed Lake County are used throughout the year to make purchases for the food pantries. The majority of the food donations were distributed to food pantries in April however there are also distributions around the holiday season. The food pantries continue to see an increase in demand. This year's food drive raised more than 45,000 pounds of food and $60,000 to help feed the hungry in Lake County

United Way of Lake County wrapped up its 2012 Feed Lake County campaign last week with an awards reception. The ceremony took place at the organization's Mentor office and recognition was given to businesses, organizations and individuals who contributed above and beyond to make the annual food drive a success. The Feed Lake County Campaign began on March 2 and raised more than 45,100 pounds of food and $62,000 in cash donations. The money will be used to purchase more food throughout the year. United Way Closes Books On Another 'Feed Lake County' Drive

The United Way of Lake County collected more than 40,000 pounds of food and almost $60,000 to help feed the hungry

This year, people donated 40,900 pounds of food and more than $59,000 to United Way of Lake County's annual Feed Lake County drive. The local chapter of the United Way capped the event by giving the food donations to more than 50 local food banks Tuesday. About a dozen of these food banks are in Mentor, said UWLC spokeswoman Gayle Sikula. The food banks went to Feed Lake County's temporary headquarters at Great Lakes Mall and received boxes filled with canned fruits and vegetables, tuna fish, pasta, peanut butter and more. The money that people donate during Feed Lake County is used to buy food throughout the year -- which is, once again, given to local food banks. United Way, Giant Eagle Extend A Helping Ham

The United Way of Lake County distributed more than 700 hams to feed families in need this Easter

The United Way of Lake County gave away 712 hams on Tuesday that will be given to families in need for this Easter as part of its Feed Lake County food drive. The hams will be distributed through 48 local food banks. The United Way of Lake County bought the hams from Giant Eagle, who delivered them to the charity's Mentor office. From there, volunteers from the Mentor High School football team and Lake House Men's Residential distributed the hams to the food pantries as they came to pick them up.  Thus far, the 2012 Feed Lake County campaign has raised about 18,000 pounds of food and more than $30,000.
