Their hair will be used to make wigs for children who have cancer
Some Lake Catholic Cougars shed their manes Thursday at Blondie Hair Design to help children with cancer. The hair will be donated to Locks of Love, which uses the hair to make wigs for sick children who cannot afford them. Annaliesa Stebal, Casey Kotoch and Nicole Saraniti are just the most recent students to grow out their hair so they can donate it. Even Lake Catholic Principal Robert Kumazec grew a ponytail so he could give his hair. The Lake Catholic community was spurred to action in part because of two 8-year-old girls. Sara Hudson and Erin Potter were battling T-cell lymphoma and leukemia, respectively. Sara is the daughter of Lake Catholic biology teacher Scott Hudson and Erin is related to several Lake Catholic staff and faculty …

Just days after he campaigned in Mentor, President Barack Obama gave the city a shout-out Wednesday morning in his acceptance speech. While discussing his "Obamacare" initative, Obama gave a brief account of meeting Kevin Potter, a Kirtland man he met while visiting Mentor. Potter's daughter 3-year-old daughter, Erin, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2007. When Potter introduced Obama at his Mentor High School rally, he said Obamacare saved the girl's life. Here's what the President said, as transcribed by Fox8.com: "I saw it just the other day in Mentor, Ohio where a father told the story of his eight-year-old daughter whose long battle with leukemia nearly cost the family everything ... Had it not been for the health …

Catch the biggest stories from in and around Mentor this week
1. Let's start with good news -- the best news, actually. Erin Potter -- an 8-year-old girl from Kirtland who is fighting her third occurrence of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia -- had one of her wishes fulfilled Tuesday when she met pop star Justin Bieber during a concert in Chicago. It was a moment that was a long time coming -- a moment that might have never happened had it not been for a lot of people who care about Erin, including some who have never met her. For months now, people have been tweeting the hashtags #bieber4potter and #BiebsMeetErin to try to get the singer's attention. The movement caught the attention of some good Samaritans who gave the Potter family Bieber tickets for a Chicago show. In addition to enjoying the …

The 8-year-old who has fought off three bouts of cancer is helping raise money for new bone marrow transplant rooms at Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital
Erin Potter isn't what you would call lucky. No 8-year-old girl who has had to fight off three bouts of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia can be deemed lucky. But, in some ways, she is fortunate. She has a family that loves her, people rooting for her -- many she has never even met -- and a hospital filled with people that have become like an extended family for her. By the estimation of Jeni Potter (Erin's mother), Erin has spent about 100 day this year at Rainbow Babies & Children's Fund since March when her leukemia reoccurred for the second time. That includes five consecutive weeks where the entire family camped out at the hospital while Erin was receiving treatment. And, the year before that, the Potter family spent nine consecutive weeks…

See some of the biggest stories this week in Mentor
1. A Mentor family experienced a bitter homecoming this week. Corp. Pryor Gobble was 18 years old when he disappeared near Hagaru-ri, North Korea, on Dec. 12, 1950. And Sunday -- after 62 years of hoping, wishing, praying and sometimes almost giving up -- Gobble's remains finally came home. Read how Gobble's family reacted when they heard his body was found and check out photo galleries from Gobble's return and his funeral. 2. First Mentor, then the midwest; and, soon, the galaxy. Lidia Gurley, 19, of Mentor, was recently crowned Miss Midwesy Galaxy. See how she's preparing for Galaxy Pageant's international competition later this month. (Hint: a lot of sowing.) 3. A Mentor man is accused of trying to lure a group of children into the …

A community uses social media to help a girl reach for her dreams
#Bieber4Potter -- it's not just a hashtag you see on Twitter. It's not just a wish for Erin Potter to meet her favorite singer. It's a rallying cry and a prayer for an 8-year-old girl who is fighting cancer for the third time. The Winning One Erin has already been through more in her eight years than most will ever experience. She was first diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on Feb. 27, 2007. Twice she has fought and beat cancer -- the second time after a bone marrow transplant using cord blood from her baby sister Mary -- and twice it has returned. Erin, who lives in Kirtland, will return to the hospital Wednesday for chemotherapy in preparation for another bone marrow transplant on July 18. Jeni Potter, Erin's mother, calls …

The undefeated Broadmoor basketball team played against coaches from area high schools in a charity game
The Broadmoor Bobcats bested a team comprised of coaches from area high schools Monday night at Mentor High School. The Bobcats maintained their 11-year undefeated streak by beating the coaches for the fourth consecutive year. The coaches team was coached by News-Herald staff writer Bill Tilton and included Cardinals boys basketball coach Bob Krizancic and Lake Catholic boys basketball coach Mark Chicone. However, the game was about so much more than wins and losses. It also doubled as a fundraiser. Most of the money raised was split between Broadmoor and Chardon High. Additionally, before the game, Thomas DeCarlo shaved his head to raise money for his 8-year-old cousin Erin Potter's leukemia treatment. This is the third time Erin's cancer…
