Eighteen people have received hunting permits from the city of Mentor thus far
The city of Mentor began its first bow hunting season Saturday. On the first day, six deer were killed -- five does and one buck -- said Tim Miller, a natural resource specialist for the city of Mentor. The city has been issuing packets so hunters can apply for permits to hunt in Mentor for about a month. Thus far, 18 people have received permits to hunt in Mentor, Miller said. He added that more were in the process of being appraised. People need a hunting license and all required permits from the state before they can apply for a permit in Mentor. People can only hunt on either parcels of five or more acres or a combination of no more than three adjacent properties of five or more acres that aren't separated by a public roadway. All …

Catch up on the biggest news stories of the week
1. This was a big news week in Mentor. A lot of long-simmering issues (both good and bad) came to the surface. For example, Cleveland Clinic has demonstrated an interest in developing on 47 acres in the Newell Creek. That could potentially be huge -- maybe even hundreds of jobs huge. After all, one does not simply acquire 47 acres to park cars. For now, the Clinic is being cautious about discussing its intentions. "We are currently in a due diligence process which could position us to acquire land in Mentor," said Heather Phillips, the director of corporate communications for the Clinic. "At this time, no specific decisions have been made regarding potential uses of the land. 2. The trial of Joseph Thomas -- the man accused of raping and …

A 5-2 majority of City Council voted for an ordinance that legalized bow hunting of deer in Mentor The vote occurred during a City Council meeting Tuesday night at City Hall. The ordinance says: Council Members Carolyn Bucey and Robert Shiner voted against the ordinance. Bucey said she agreed that the city of Mentor had a problem with deer overpopulation. However, she supported a full-on culling program as opposed to bow hunting. Bucey noted that Rick Tyler, who oversaw the Cleveland Metroparks' deer culling program before he retired, suggested the city have a culling program in place before it legalize hunting. Meanwhile, Shiner said the city should not legalize bow hunting and then institute a broader culling program. If anything, he …

Experts even set up a tree stand at Mentor Public Library to show how it's properly done
Urban deer hunting has been a hot topic in the city this summer with Mentor City Council considering the legalizing of bow hunting on private property. Consequently, a joint seminar from Gander Mountain and Mentor Public Library is aptly timed. Experts from Gander Mountain, as well as the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, offered tips on deer hunting and tree stand setups. Gander Mountain Store Manager Kevin Matty and Zone Supervisor Mitch Leppelmeier reviewed baiting techniques, and the safe operation of the compound bow and crossbow used to harvest deer in urban areas. Later the men demonstrated the safe way to arm and disarm a bow and the use of a haul line to pull up and lower gear and unloaded bows to a tree stand. Later in the …

Thus far, 2,160 residents have answered and most of them want to see fewer deer in the city. The members of Mentor City Council seem to agree that something should be done to control the deer population in the city. However, they do not yet have a consensus on precisely what steps should be taken and what order those steps should be in. Council chose not to vote on an ordinance Tuesday night that, if passed, would legalize the bow hunting of deer on private property in Mentor under specific conditions. Instead, they opted to revisit the ordinance during their next Council meeting Sept. 4. During a work session before the meeting, Ward One Councilman Robert Shiner asked why the city would legalize hunting before it had established a deer culling program. Shiner said just legalizing deer hunting was "an incomplete system." "We have …

Thursday, August 9, 2012
Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question posed to them by readers or another member of council. Obviously, the deer population has been a hot topic in Mentor for awhile. Now the city is asking residents to take a survey about their own experiences dealing with the deer. So I am curious about your feelings as per the deer. Are they a hassle? A nice bit of wildlife in an otherwise urban environment? Flower killers? A little bit of all of that? Donna Milnes: I have lived in Mentor for over 40 years and, in the beginning, seeing a deer was very rare. When my children were growing up, if we saw deer when walking through Veterans Park or Headlands Forest, it was a very special treat. Unfortunately now my grandchildren think the…

Mentor has turned to its residents to learn more about the white-tailed deer population living in the city. The deer population has been a popular and occasionally divisive subject in the city for awhile. Many feel the deer population has reached an unsustainable size that not only causes car crashes and property damage, it also damages habitat and threatens biodiversity. However, others feel many of the tactics that would be used to control the population would be inhumane. Earlier this year, Council gave the city administration permission to pursue the permits needed to get a Deer Management Plan approved by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Then Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak presented an ordinance to City Council that …
