Deepwood/Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities cap Awareness Month with second ever Deepwood Idol competition
The Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities held its second ever Deepwood Idol competition Saturday at the Great Lakes Mall. While its vocational guidance center holds a talent competition every year, this is the second time Deepwood has had a contest for all of its programs -- from the VGC to Broadmoor. Deepwood clients sang everything from Carly Rae Jepson and Elton John and danced to Maroon 5 and Elvis for a crowd of more than 500 people. Enjoy our video and photos from the event. I saw a lot of of you with cameras, also, so feel free to add your pics and clips to our gallery.

Workers from Deepwood's Vocational Guidance Center took part in an "American Idol" competition for the right to move on to the finals
One performer asked the crowd to "Call Me Maybe," while a tap dancer was all smiles while "Puttin' on the Ritz." There was never a dull moment at Thursday's VGC Idol competition, hosted at the Deepwood Vocational Guidance Center. While every act kept the audience enthused, Jonathan Wright and Carol Jamieson came out on top with their rendition of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing." They will be among the performers to take part in the Deepwood Idol final competition March 30 at Great Lakes Mall on March 30. Here are the other winners, as selected by judges Asa Cox, Patty Harkin, Dawn Kendrick, and Amy Pawling: The event is part of the Lake County Board of DD's Developmental Disabilities Awarness Month activities.

The activity is the latest example of Ridge and Deepwood working together
The Lake County Board of DD/Deepwood celebrated the beginning of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month with the latest example of its partnership with Ridge Middle School. Two advisors and 21 students made the trip to Deepwood's Vocational Guidance Center to read Dr. Seuss books to the habilitation and work training groups there. This marks the sixth year that Ridge students read to people at the VGC, Lake County Board of DD/Deepwood spokeswoman Lynnmarie Landwei-Phillips said. In the past year, Ridge students built and launched paper rockets with the Noble Readers Book Club. Students made an ocean mural at the VGC in August, and have built gingerbread houses and taken part in the United Way Day of Caring clean up of the flower beds …

After making friends with student volunteers at one of Deepwood's workshops, 22-year-old Brian Posey, wanted to be a student for a day
Brian Posey simply wanted to be a Lake Catholic High School student for a day. Instead, he received rock star-type treatment Friday during the Winter Sports Rally. The crowd of students and administrators roared as Posey, a 22-year-old with cerebral palsy, pushed his wheelchair for a lap around the gymnasium. He waved at students in the crowd, beaming as he soaked in the moment when he made a gym full of new friends. "I didn't think he'd come back," joked his mother, Brenda Houston, who watched the special moment off to the side. When Posey wheeled back to the bottom of the bleachers, he had two words to describe what had just happened. "It's great," he exclaimed after he was introduced as part of the rally. Posey met a group of 10 Lake …

Four of their children -- Ellen Kessler, Deborah Foley, Robert Foley and Patrick Foley -- gathered Saturday at Fall Fest for the dedication of the Foley Field House. Mary Ellen and the the elder Robert Foley were fundamental in supporting the passage of the 169 board laws 45 years ago. These laws provided a mechanism for funding and services, …

The yard outside of Deepwood's Vocational Guidance Center was transformed into a midway Friday morning by the employees of Selman & Company. Clients of the Lake County Board of Developmental Disabilities could win stuffed animals by playing ring-toss, putt-putt, frisbee-throw and many other carnival games. They could also shoot hopes, enjoy the band, eat popcorn and drink slushies. There was even a dunk tank where clients could douse Bruce Hillburn, who works for Deepwood's recreation department. The Selman employees organize and host the carnival each year. Patty McGuire, the Selman employee who first suggested the event, said she wanted to have a volunteer event for Deepwood because she has a nephew with autism.

Mentor carried the Special Olympics' Torch Tuesday, making a special stop at Deepwood
It rained torrentially the last time the Special Olympics torch passed through Mentor. This year, the temperature creeped into the low 90s. But an earthquake probably wouldn't deter the enthusiastic crowd that chauffered the torch through Mentor Tuesday morning. The torch began its journey in Conneaut Monday and will pass through Cleveland on its way to Columbus Friday to celebrate the beginning of the Special Olympics. The whole way, it will be escorted by police officers from all over Ohio, as well as Special Olympians. The torch traveled from Target to Deepwood, where well wishers gathered for a cookout to celebrate the Special Olympics. Several Deepwood clients compete in more than a dozen events at the Special Olympics. At the end of …
