Businesses and organizations still have time to volunteer and participate in service projects throughout the area

The United Way of Lake County is still looking for volunteers to help with service projects during its annual Day of Caring. While more than 50 businesses in organizations have already volunteered to participate, more than 100 service projects have been submitted. That means several opportunites to help those who need it may be missed if more people don't volunteer On the Day of Caring, area companies, schools, service clubs and other interested individuals volunteer to adopt 1-day projects that have been submitted by local nonprofit organizations. The United Way of Lake County is looking for both volunteers and projects for its 20th annual Day of Caring. On the Day of Caring, area companies, schools, service clubs and other interested individuals volunteer to adopt 1-day projects that have been submitted by local nonprofit organizations. The projects can be on behalf of people in need or organizations with limited resources. For example, previous Day of Caring projects have included building a ramp for a wheelchair-bound senior and helping refurbish the grounds at James A. Garfield National Historic Site. Catch Up on All The News You May Have Missed This Week
Busy week doesn't begin to describe it. So much happened in the last seven days, I feel as if I could write "15 Things You May Have Missed This Week." 1. Unfortunately, we have to begin with sad news. Robert Dilgren -- a retired Mentor firefighter and former Fairport Harbor police chief -- passed away this week. Dilgren, an experienced kayaker, was kayaking on Lake Erie near the Mentor Headlands neighborhood when he fell out of his vessel. Two good Samaritans, Timothy Gooding and Mark Humensky, brought him to shore and gave him CPR after Dilgren lost consciousness. Despite their best efforts, both they and the paramedics were unable to save Dilgren. He passed away Wednesday in the Cleveland Clinic. Authorities think a cardiac problem …

More than 650 people from 42 organizations volunteered to help with 66 projects across the county as part of the United Way of Lake County's 19th annual Day of Caring. Several of those projects were in Mentor and many would not have been completed without the volunteers' help. Nonprofits like James A. Garfield National Historic Site, Mentor Public Library, Lake Humane Society and Deepwood received a hand trimming hedges, staining benches, painting walls and so much more. "The volunteers have been very proactive and were coming to us for projects months in advance, before we were going to them," United Way of Lake County spokesman Nick Carrabine said.
