The Protect & Serve Tavern returned Saturday afternoon to the Great Lakes Mall for its 18th year. Local police and judges served nonalcoholic drinks and snacks to shoppers as a way to encourage them to have a safe and sober holiday season. They also offered recipes for some nonalcoholic mocktails, made by local police departments. Here are just a few: Angry Bird Bombs Recipe by Lakeland Community College Police Department 1 part fruit punch Kool-Aid 1 part lemonade 1 part blue raspberry Kool-Aid Put a popsicle stick in the fruit punch Kool-Aid and freeze it. City Council Votes For Public Works Equipment-Sharing Agreement

Council also thanked Chief Daniel Llewellyn for his service, voted to put cameras in police cruisers during its meeting Tuesday evening

Mentor City Council voted in favor of an agreement during its meeting Tuesday night that will allow it to share public works equipment with Painesville, Painesville Township and Madison. The pact is part of a pilot program for the state of Ohio and it leaves room for other municipalities in Lake County, as well as the county engineer's office, to join. In addition to loaning out its public works equipment, this means the city of Mentor could also receive additional help from neighboring communities in time of need, Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said. "We can choose to participate at whatever level we see fit," Filipiak said to Council. He added that the agreement was "very open ended." "We have a structure in place to allow us to …

Chief Daniel Llewellyn Reflects on 33 Years With Mentor Police

Llewellyn is retiring from the department at the end of the year

Mentor Police Chief Daniel Llewellyn will be retiring from the department at the end of this year after 33 1/2 years of service. It will be the first time he hasn't had a full-time job since he was 20 and started working in the coal mines of western Pennsylvania near his home town of Nanty Glo. He said he learned two things in those mines that stick with him to this day. The first was a bit of advice he got from an older coworker when the machinery in the mines broke down. "When the machinery broke down, you have to grab the shovels," Llewellyn explained. So he and the coworker grabbed shovels and started moving the coal. After awhile, Llewellyn was sweating heavily and winded but the older man didn't have a bead on him. So Llewellyn asked…

Mentor Police Adding Second K-9 With Donations

Mentor Police K-9 Titan greeted Mentor City Council last night

Mentor K-9 Titan could barely contain his enthusiasm while meeting Mentor City Council Tuesday night at City Hall. He barked, paced and even placed his two front paws on the podium as if to speak before finally laying at his partner Patrolman Terry Wurgler's feet. And while it may have been exciting for City Council to meet its K-9 officer, even bigger news came from Kevin Yaugher, the president of Marc's. Yaugher announced that the store donated $5,000 from its doggy rewards program to the Mentor Police Department to help buy and train a second K-9. Mentor Police Chief Daniel Llewellyn thanked Yaugher, as well as the other people and organizations who have donated to the Mentor K-9 fund. "We have a great program and it's because of …
