The Cardinals connected with 22 3-pointers in an 85-51 win over North
The Mentor High boys basketball team made 22 3-pointers during its 85-51 win over North Saturday night. Even for a team like Mentor -- one that's known to shoot well from beyond the arc -- this is impressive. In fact, it's unprecedented. That 22nd three pointer -- made by Fred Buse with 55 seconds left -- broke a Mentor (10-2) school record. Caleb Potter and Conner Krizancic led the charge, hitting seven and six 3-pointers, respectively. And the Cardinals were not just playing a quantity game -- throwing up three after three to see if it would connet. They made 22 of 36 (61 percent) of their three pointers against North. However, that sort of dominance from the outside meant they also only scored 19 points from either inside the arc or the…

The Cardinals never trailed and ultimately topped the taller team 80-60
A 20-point margin is what passes for a close victory in this early portion of the season for the Mentor High boys basketball team. The Cardinals are still undefeated for the season (7-0) and at the Arby's Classic basketball tournament (2-0) in Tennessee after never trailing and topping the taller Princeton Day 80-60 Friday evening. However, the tests will get tougher at the tournament, which attracts some of the top schools in the country. Conner Krizancic led all scoring against Princeton Day. He was perfect from the field -- scoring 22 points. He also made all six of his shots from behind the 3-point line. Caleb Potter added 18 points and seven rebounds for the Cardinals. "We can shoot the basketball and we are playing hard, now it is …

Cardinals look strong in 82-51 win over Brush
High school sports is all about turnover. Each year you replace graduating seniors and any other players who have not returned. And, despite the Mentor High boys basketball team's consistent success, it seemed it would be a difficult task to replace the trifecta of Danny Wallack, Mitch Trubisky and Ohio's Mr. Basketball Justin Fritts from last year's squad. Furthermore, the Cardinals were also without starters Brandon Fritts and Brody Nelson because of injuries Saturday night against Brush. Ultimately, the vacancies did not matter. A big night from junior Caleb Potter and consistent work from the entire team led to an 82-51 win against Brush. Potter led the Cardinals in scoring and rebounds with 21 points and 13 boards. Conner Krizancic …

The Associated Press of Ohio singled out several Cardinals and Cougars for individual honors
While Mentor High quarterback Mitch Trubisky has garnered well-deserved spotlight for winning Mr. Football and offensive player of the year, he is far from the only Mentor athlete to be honored by the Associated Press of Ohio. Trubisky's teammate Brandon Fritts received first-team, all-state honors. Fritts caught 73 passes for 1,244 yards and 17 touchdowns. Fellow Cardinals receiver Conner Krizancic and defensive lineman Kent Berger received special mentions. Krizancic caught 79 passes for 1,144 and 12 touchdowns. Meanwhile, Berger led a young defensive squad through the regular season and playoffs. Two Lake Catholic Cougars were also named to the first team All Ohio. Offensive lineman Evan Grosel was named all state first team after …

The Cardinals win regional championship by going through the team that knocked them out of the playoffs last year and the only team to beat them this season
"To win Region 1, you have to go through St. Ignatius," Mentor quarterback Mitch Trubisky said after the Cardinals' 57-56 win over the Wildcats Saturday night. That was true when Ignatius knocked the Cardinals out of the playoffs in the regional championship last year. However, now Mentor has more than revenge. They have the regional championship and they won it in spectacular fashion. It came down to one play in triple overtime. Mentor and Ignatius traded touchdowns for two overtimes. Then Wildcats Michael LaManna tossed a touchdown pass to running back Timothy McVey. The Cardinals responded in kind. A pass from Trubisky to Connor Krizancic set up a Trubisky touchdown run. Mentor Head Coach Steve Trivisonno knew his defense was tired and …

The Cardinals shellacked the Medina Bees, 63-21 in a game that was never close
Since suffering their only loss of the season to St. Ignatius, the Mentor Cardinals (7-1) have outscored their opponents 45-14, 55-0, 49-21 and 56-28. Soon people will run out of synonyms for "rout." The Medina Bees (2-6) were the Cardinals' latest victim. Mentor trounced them, 63 to 21, in a blowout that was not even as close as the score might imply. Mentor's prolific offense scored early and often, tacking on 28 points before the end of the first quarter. A 19-yard touchdown run by Mentor quarterback and North Carolina recruit Mitch Trubisky cracked the seal just 90 seconds into the game. Conner Krizancic stretched the Cardinals' lead with touchdown runs of one and 54 yards -- still in the first quarter. Then, running back Nick Delisa …

Cardinals trounce a tough Blue Devils squad 49-21
It's fair to say the Mentor Cardinals (5-1) have found their rhythm. In their last three games they have accrued 149 points. Friday night, they dominated a tough Brunswick squad 49-21. "As a team, it was our best performance of the season," Mentor Head Coach Steve Trivisonno said. Cardinals quarterback Mitch Trubisky threw for five touchdowns and ran for another. That would be a career night for many quarterbacks. For Trubisky and the Cardinals offense, this is becoming typical. "Just another day at work," Trivisonno joked, when asked about Trubisky's performance. Then he added, "He's a special player. What more can be said?" However, as with every game this season except last week's shutout against Parma, the Cardinals allowed the other …

Mentor Cardinals score 45 unanswered points in 45-14 rout
The Mayfield football team scored first Friday night. But Mentor scored second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth. The Cardinals scored 45 unanswered points in a 45-14 rout of the Mayfield Wildcats. A big reason Mentor ran away with the game was wide receiver Conner Krizancic. Krizancic ran for 38 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 74 yards and another touchdown. Most of those touches and all of those touchdowns came in the first half. "Had we kept going to him in the second half, he would have had a career night," Mentor Head Coach Steven Trivisonno said of Krizancic. Krizancic hurt his collarbone when the Cardinals played Erie McDowell, PA, two weeks ago and it still hurt last week against St. …

The Cardinals never led against a dominant Wildcats squad that won 48-21
Mentor versus St. Ignatius was supposed to be a clash of football titans -- two great teams giving what could be a preview of a playoff matchup, as they did last year. And it was that. For one quarter. Otherwise, Ignatius controlled the momentum for most of the game on the way to a 48-21 win for the Wildcats. Mentor already trailed 31-7 by halftime but the Cardinals came out reinvigorated in the third quarter. Quarterback Mitch Trubisky led a 14-play, 93-yard drive against a Wildcat defense that had mostly contained the Cardinals to that point. And Mentor capped the drive with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Trubisky to Connor Krizancic. However, a young Cardinals defense could not prevent the Wildcats from replying in kind. Ignatius …

Cardinals pull out a close win against a tough, out-of-state opponent
A tough Trojans team from McDowell High School in Erie, PA, led the Mentor Cardinals for much of the second half of their football game Friday. In fact, the Cardinals only held the lead for 30 seconds of the fourth quarter. Fortunately, those were the final 30 seconds of the game. A strong late showing from Mentor's young defense allowed them to end a seesaw game on top. The Trojans' running backs often had their way with the Cardinals defense but Mentor stepped up in the closing minutes. First, Keith McCormick snagged a fumble after a teammate knocked the ball loose with 1:30 left in the game and the score tied at 27. This led to a go-ahead 1-yard touchdown run from quarterback Mitch Trubisky. McDowell then had the ball back with 27 …
