A former United Way chair in Tennessee, Jimmy Haslam talks about how United Way touched him
Before Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam pledged to make the home team a winner, he spoke to a Mentor crowd late last week about how United Way impacted his life. "United Way has always been our No. 1 family cause," Haslam said at United Way of Lake County's annual meeting. Haslam, his father, wife and brother have all been United Way chairs at some point in their lives. That's why he flew into Greater Cleveland specifically for the meeting at LaMalfa Centre before heading back to his duties as CEO of Knoxville, Tenn.-based Pilot Flying J. Haslam admitted that he didn't know much about what United Way did when Knoxville's business community recruited him as the next local United Way chair nearly 30 years ago. He and his wife, Dee, spent …

Jimmy Haslam spoke at the United Way of Lake County's annual meeting, stressing his dedication to returning the Browns to glory
As Jimmy Haslam settled into Greater Cleveland after his October purchase of the Browns, his wife, Dee, became struck by the amicability of most Northeast Ohioans she met. "Dee and I were getting on a plane about four months ago and she says, 'everybody is so nice to us here,'" he recalled. "I said, 'honey, if we don't win in a couple years, it may not be so warm. "I get it." Haslam, who purchased the Browns for $1 billion in October, spoke for about 15 minutes Thursday morning at United Way of Lake County's annual meeting. Organization personnel said Haslam flew into Cleveland specifically for the event, and briskly exited LaMalfa Centre to head back to his plane. He spent the majority of his time on stage telling the audience of area …

Harper -- who kicked the longest field goal in the history of Ohio high school football (61 yards) -- tweeted about the workout earlier this week
Mentor High graduate and former Cardinals kicker Kevin Harper has a workout scheduled with the Browns this Friday. Harper tweeted about the upcoming workout last week. The former University of Pittsburgh Panther also recently received his MBA, according to The News-Herald. Harper has always had a powerful leg. He not only kicked the longest field goal in the history of Ohio high school football (61 yards,) but he also kicked the longest collegiate field goal ever at Heinz Field (52 yards), which is notoriously unforgiving to kickers. More recently, Harper connected on five consecutive field goal attempts from 35, 40, 45, 50 and 55 yards during the NFL Regional Combine in New York, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. That performance …

While he wasn't even on most people's radar, Rob Chudzinski is starting off strong as the new Cleveland Browns head coach.
As I was reclining in my La-Z-Boy late Thursday night, my phone went off with an alert from ESPN. "Browns hire Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski as head coach." Wait, what? Shocked. Flabbergasted. Disappointed. Those were the words to describe my feelings about this news. I didn't understand where this even came from and why they would bring a fired Browns offensive coordinator back as the head coach four years later. I was prepared for another few years of losing football and yet another coaching search. Now, less than 24 hours later, I'm singing a different tune. After today's press conference in Cleveland, I'm much more optimistic that Chudzinski (more affectionately known as "Chud") might be a good man to lead this team. "…

It has been reported today that the Cleveland Browns' head coach and General Manager Tom Heckert have been fired on Monday
Everyone saw it coming after the Cleveland Browns 24-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday, but it was confirmed on Monday. Head Coach Pat Shurmer and General Manager Tom Heckert are gone. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported through Twitter Monday morning that both had been fired after a less-than-stellar 5-11 season. Shurmer had a dismal 9-23 record over his first two seasons as the head coach. He took the position in 2011. Heckert was hired in 2010. With Shurmur out the door, the Browns will begin their search for a new head coach immediately. The Plain Dealer reports some names in the running are University of Oregon coach Chip Kelly, Penn State's Bill O'Brien, Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator and interim head coach Bruce Arians …

Mentor Police Chief Daniel Llewellyn has confirmed to WKYC that the Browns fan who put his head in a bucket of urine for $450 while tailgaiting this past Sunday is an off-duty Mentor police officer. Llewellyn told the news station that Officer Phil Croucher is an "exceptional" officer who has earned 14 commendations for his work during his tenure with the department, including praise from Secret Service and the FBI. However, Llewellyn also said that he was disappointed with Croucher's judgment. "This is not reminiscent of his 16-year career with the department," Llewellyn said. Llewellyn told Fox 19 that the department learned about Croucher's actions on Thursday. Croucher was then checked by a doctor to make sure he was not a medical risk…

Updated, 2:40 p.m.: Fox 8 News Cleveland reports that Randy Lerner will sell his controlling interest in the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland Browns owner Randy Lerner has confirmed rumors that he is in negotiations with a potential investor, Jimmy Haslam. And Patch had a blast at our draft party at Solon Panini's!
Patch came to Solon Panini's and cheered on the Browns as they drafted two offensive weapons. The Browns took running back Trent Richardson with the third pick -- they traded up from the fourth pick to snag the Alabama star -- and quarterback Brandon Weeden with the 22nd pick. We also signed up new readers for our daily e-mail newsletter, gave away some free appetizers and Panini's gift cards and generally had a good time! We hosted a live chat during the draft -- you can find the transcript here. Thanks to Solon Panini's for hosting our event! Go Browns!
