City Council To Discuss Budget, Beautification Committee At Work Session

Council can also vote on the purchase of a new fire truck

Mentor City Council is scheduled to have a work session at 5:30 p.m. before its regularly scheduled bimonthly meeting at 7 p.m. in City Hall. During the work session, Council is slated to discuss the 2013 city budget as well as the future of the Beautification Commission. The city has several vacancies on its Beautification Commission after three members' terms ended and another four resigned earlier this year. Meanwhile, at the meeting, Council can vote on the purchase of a new fire truck for the Mentor Fire Department. The city did not plan to buy a new truck until next year. However, it can save $19,376 if it buys the truck this year, Fire Chief Richard Harvey said in a memo to City Manager Kenneth Filipiak. The truck would cost $484,…

Mentor Seeking State Funding For Plaza Boulevard Extension, Other Road Projects

The city intends to apply for funding from the Ohio Public Works Commission for a trio of road projects

Mentor City Council can vote on legislation to authorize final application for state funding that will help the city pay for three separate road projects during its meeting at 7 p.m. tonight at City Hall. The most noteworthy of these road projects is the Plaza Boulevard extension, which would lengthen Plaza Boulevard until it intersects with St. Clair Avenue. That would create a north-south corridor that connects Mentor Avenue and Tyler Boulevard. Assistant City Manager Tony Zampedro previously said most of the engineering and other preliminary work is done on the project. However, the city wants to find some outside funding for the extension so it will not need to pay the entire $4 million that it's expected to cost. The city, pending …

City Council Unanimously Approves Shooting Range Legislation

Proposed shooting range would still need a conditional-use permit from the city's Planning Commission

Mentor City Council unanimously voted for a change to the city's zoning code that would allow for a professional indoor shooting range in Mentor. The ranges are now permitted in the city's industrial zones, with a conditional-use permit from the Planning Commission. David Holtz attended the Council meeting Tuesday evening and told Council members that he intended to pursue a permit from the Planning Commission in the near future. Council already passed a resolution that amends the city's ban on firing guns in the city. They can now be fired -- but only in a commercial indoor shooting range. The issue initially came up when Holtz asked if it would be possible to open a commercial shooting range in Mentor, City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said …

Shooting Range Legislation On City Council Agenda Tonight

Council can also vote on one-time grant for local cupcakery

Mentor City Council can vote on a proposed change to the city's zoning code that would allow for a professional indoor shooting range in Mentor. Planning Commission already approved the proposed change; and, seeing as Council recommended the zoning change in the first place, it would be a surprise if they did not vote for it tonight. If approved, professional indoor shooting ranges would be possible in the city's industrial zones. Council already passed a resolution that amends the city's ban on firing guns in the city. They can now be fired -- but only in a commercial indoor shooting range. The issue initially came up when a business owner asked if it would be possible to open a commercial shooting range in Mentor, City Manager Kenneth …

It was expanded in 1988 so it is now bounded by the city's border with Painesville Township, State Route 2, Hopkins Road and the Norfolk & Southern railroad line. A 5-2 majority of City Council voted for an ordinance that legalized bow hunting of deer in Mentor The vote occurred during a City Council meeting Tuesday night at City Hall. The ordinance says: Council Members Carolyn Bucey and Robert Shiner voted against the ordinance. Bucey said she agreed that the city of Mentor had a problem with deer overpopulation. However, she supported a full-on culling program as opposed to bow hunting. Bucey noted that Rick Tyler, who oversaw the Cleveland Metroparks' deer culling program before he retired, suggested the city have a culling program in place before it legalize hunting. Meanwhile, Shiner said the city should not legalize bow hunting and then institute a broader culling program. If anything, he …

Bow hunting is cruel and inhumane. The heartless "murderers" that call themselves hunters don't care about the suffering of a harmless deer. They lay in wait hiding to kill. Small minded idiots that get their jollies off of surpriising and killing a deer just standing there is just so sick. I thought the parks protected and preserved wildlife. Not anymore. You will NEVER hunt on my property.   more ›

Officials from the city of Mentor, Lake County and the state of Ohio recognized Sgt. Smykowski, a native of Mentor, died at the age of 23 after the Hummer in which he rode hit a roadside bomb in June 2006 in the Al Anbar province of Iraq. City Of Mentor Places Limits On Garage Sales

Residents having garage sales will not be required to get permits, as initially suggested

Mentor City Council passed an ordinance that places some limits on how often and how long residents can have garage sales. Now people can only have up to three garage sales per year and each sale cannot last longer than four consecutive days. Additionally, the ordinance requires people to: However, one aspect of the initially proposed ordinance has been ditched. Originally, residents would have been required to get a permit to have a garage sale. The permit would enable the city to monitor just how many garage sales a resident has had per year. Additionally, the permit would have been free, Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said. However, multiple City Council members raised concerns about the permit. During a previous Council meeting, …

How many people have been harmed by a 5 day garage sale, or a sale starting at 8:30 AM lasting till7:30 PM? I feel this is an example of government overstepping itself. As far as signs go, they are anAamerican tradition, part of the routine for a sucessful sale. More and more people are getting their information from the internet and don't actually have delivery of a newspaper. This new 'law' …   more ›

Mentor City Council To Revisit Deer Hunting Ordinance Tonight

The city will discuss the recently proposed legislation that would allow bow hunting of deer on private property in Mentor

Mentor City Council will once again discuss proposed legislation that would, if passed, allow for the bow hunting of deer in the city. The ordinance is on the schedule to be discussed at a work session 5:30 p.m. today at City Hall. It is also on the agenda for the Council meeting at 7 p.m. tonight. Earlier this year, Council gave the city administration permission to pursue the permits needed to get a Deer Management Plan approved by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. This latest ordinance is only part of the city's ultimate plan and not its totality, city officials said. The ordinance proposes: City Council discussed the proposed ordinance at their last meeting. However, some Council members had concerns about it so they decided to…

This article proves that the deer killing program has everything to do with hunting and absolutely nothing to do with anything else. I hope Mentor does not lower themselves to the level of Solon and other cities where the adminstration has become shills for the hunting lobby. They should keep in mind that hunting or culling as they like to sanitize the word, does nothing to control the size of …   more ›
