Mama Says

Christmas Through The Eyes Of A Child

My children list their favorite things about the holiday

This week Sadie suddenly waxed poetic in her 8-year-old way:    “One of my favorite things about Christmas is listening to the oven beeping, because I know that something yummy is baking and it’s almost ready to eat. And I like the way the trees smell. And I like to decorate and use all the sparkly glitter and pretty ribbons.” (She frequently asks the dreaded question: “Hey Mom, where do we keep all the glitter and the glue?") “And I like the sound of bells and the smell of snow outside. And I like the way Christmastime looks – the dim lights and the lights outside and the way the snow sparkles in the sun.” Wow. Recycle Old Phones, Clothes and Coats; Donate New Toys This Christmas

Do you have items you no longer need? A number of holiday collections are underway and items can be easily donated at one location. Find out more!

Are you buying a new winter jacket? Did your kids get duplicate toys this year? Did Santa bring you a new cell phone? If you have items you’d like to toss but aren’t sure what to do with them, a number of collections are taking place in Mentor and many of these items can be put to good use. If you just updated or your wardrobe and have coats or other clothes you no longer need, donations are always being collected at the local Salvation Army Thrift Store on 7000 Heisley Road. Similarly, many of you may have received new cell phones this year. Instead of tossing your old one away, consider giving it to Cell Phones for Soldiers. Finally, we get to toys. Maybe your child received two of the same gift. Maybe they're just feeling generous. Well…

Moms Talk: A Holiday Watch List

What movies and specials do you and your family watch each year?

Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week our question is: It's the holiday season. Hanukkah begins this Friday; Christmas is three weeks away; Kwanzaa starts the 26th (or, at least, so says Google.) It may sound trite but one of my favorite parts of the season is breaking out holiday TV specials. My wife is a sucker for the 12 Days of Christmas. I'm a Muppet Family Christmas kind of guy. What holiday specials do your families love? Peanuts? For Better or for Worse? Justice League? Donna Milnes: Our family always watches the children's classics: Rudolph, Frosty, Grinch and last year we added the Elf on the Shelf (which my grandchildren have at …

Moms Talk: Christmas Spending Limits

Local moms talk about trying to place limits on holiday spending

Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week our question is: Understanding that it will be different for different families, what do you think is a reasonable limit to set on holiday shopping for you kids and grandkids? Or, rather, do you simply identify the gifts you want to get them and worry about the money side of things later? Melanie Majikas: That's a difficult question to answer, because obviously every family has different budgets. And as kids get older, their wish-list items become far more expensive. Our approach has been to get the kids to identify just a couple of things that they would really like, and try to make that happen. I don't…
