United Way, City of Mentor Host Snowy Golf Tournament

Players can still register to play golf in the snow Jan. 26 at Black Brook Golf Course

The annual Lake County Chili Open is one of the rare outdoor events that becomes more popular when it snows. So make sure you get your tickets now before it sells out. More than 200 golfers come out each year to play winter golf at Black Brook Golf Course. They swing through a course of nine snowy holes -- driving over snowdrifts and putting on frozen greens -- that range from 65 to 100 yards in length. They play with neon orange balls. That way, they don't get lost in the snow. Afterward, they warm up in the clubhouse with a big bowl of chili. Watch: Golfers Take Swing In The Snow At Black Brook Chili Open

The charity event, which is hosted by Mentor Parks & Recreation, raises money for the United Way of Lake County

The snow and cold did not deter about 230 golfers at the seventh annual Chili Open Saturday morning at Black Brook Golf Course. Money from the event goes to the United Way of Lake County. In its seven-year history, the Chili Open has made more than $10,000 for the local chapter of the United Way. The event is co-hosted by Mentor Parks & Recreation and the United Way of Lake County. United Way employees were also at the open selling tickets for the charity's Super Raffle, in which people can win prizes ranging from a new car to a 5-day cruise.

Snow Does Not Deter Golfers at Black Brook

More than 250 golfers gathered at Black Brook Golf Course for the Chili Open

Freezing temperatures did not deter the 256 golfers who gathered for the sixth annual Chili Open at Black Brook Golf Course. They braved nine snowy holes and thawed in the clubhouse afterward with a warm bowl of chili. The open is a fundraiser for the United Way of Lake County.

United Way, City of Mentor Host Snowy Golf Tournament

Players can still register to play golf in the snow Jan. 22 at Black Brook Golf Course

Only in Mentor would snow be an incentive to play golf. But Jill Korsok, the city's recreation program manager, swears it's true. The more it snows, the more people register to play in the city's sixth annual Chili Open Jan. 22 at Black Brook Golf Course. The number of registrants leaped from 187 to 206 after it snowed on Tuesday and Wednesday. "It's so much more fun when it snows," she said. Golfers will swing through nine snowy holes, driving over snowdrifts and putting on frozen greens. Afterward, they will warm up in the clubhouse with a big bowl of chili. Black Brook clears tee areas and greens, but golfers will have to hack through the snow anywhere else on the course, Korsok said. Money from the event goes to the United Way of Lake …
