Council Gives City Go-Ahead To Pursue Deer Management Permit

This approval does not necessarily mean the city will allow deer culling in the future

Mentor City Council voted for an ordinance that gives the city administration permission to pursue the permits needed to get a Deer Management Plan approved by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Council passed the resolution 6-0 during its meeting Tuesday at City Hall. Councilman Bruce Landeg was excused from the meeting. Specifically, the resolution allows the city government to pursue a deer damage control permit and all other permits needed for a Deer Management Plan. The aforementioned plan does not inherently have to include deer culling. However, if the city did want to cull the white-tailed deer in Mentor, it would need a management plant that was approved by the ODNR. The proposed ordinance says the city wants reduce the …

Several Mentor residents attended Tuesday's work session to offer their stories of deer-related woe

Several Mentor residents attended the City Council and administration's work session on deer Tuesday evening at City Hall. All of them -- or, at least, all who spoke -- were in favor of thinning the herd. Dave Bower said he has gone to extraordinary lengths to keep deer off his property and away from his gardens. He has used fox and coyote urine, flashing lights, an air compressor and sound effects ranging from bombs to coyote howls to keep the deer away, he told Council. Bower also said the overpopulation has caused them to act unusually. For example, they show no fear of humans. "They're rats on hooves right now, because they're not acting like deer," he said.
