Mentor Police Arrest Man Outside of Dr. Jacqueline Hoynes School

What began as an issue over child custody ended with an armed man's arrest

What started as an argument over a child's custody ended with the arrest of an armed man at about noon Tuesday outside of the Dr. Jacqueline Hoynes School building, which houses the Cardinal Autism Resource and Education School. The man -- Armand Dinardo Jr., 46, of Mentor-on-the-Lake -- drove to the school with his teenage daughter at about 11 a.m., Mentor Police Lt. Ken Zbiegien said. He had taken custody of his daughter Monday, though he legally wasn't supposed to have her, Zbiegien added. They went to the school to pick up the girl's cell phone from her mother, who worked there, Zbiegien said. The child went inside the school while Dinardo remained outside. When the mother saw her daughter, she told she was staying with her and called …

Watch: Mentor Schools Rename Headlands Elementary For Jacqueline Hoynes

The former elementary school houses the Cardinal Autism Resource Education School, which Hoynes initiated during her tenure as superintendent

The Mentor Schools Board of Education renamed the former Headlands Elementary building as the Dr. Jacqueline A. Hoynes School in honor of the district's erstwhile superintendent Tuesday evening. Several school officials thanked Hoynes for her decades of service with the district during a brief ceremony before the School Board meeting. "One of (Hoynes') strongest characteristics is that she was willing to make the tough decisions that other superintendents in other districts wouldn't," Board President Alan Mihok said. Mihok cited Hoynes' willingness to close Center Street School and then Headlands Elementary -- due to the district's shrinking student population -- as difficult and unpopular, but ultimately correct, decisions she made. Mihok…

Jackie Hoynes was an administrator who managed by intimidation and although she helped get the schools back on their feet financially spent money she didn't have and issued edicts that caused alot of stress throughout the school system. I am so fed up with people praising someone who doesn't deserve it. Let's face it she was in the right place at the right time otherwise she would have never been…   more ›

Mentor School Board Honors Retiring Superintendent Jacqueline Hoynes

The CARES facility will be renamed the Dr. Jacqueline A. Hoynes School in her honor

The Mentor Schools Board of Education honored the district's retiring Superintendent Jacqueline Hoynes during their meeting Tuesday evening at Mentor High School. They announced that the Cardinal Autism Resource Education School would be renamed the Dr. Jacqueline A. Hoynes School in honor of her 30 years working at the district and for her 10 years as superintendent. During the meeting, School Board President Alan Mihok listed the many changes to the district Hoynes has overseen during her tenure. Mihok joked that the list of accomplishments was so long that he tried to pare it. "But every one I read, I said, 'We can't cut that out. We can't cut that out,'" Mihok said. Hoynes' accomplishments include restoring the district from financial …

Mentor Schools Foundation Donates Equipment To CARES

The foundation used the proceeds from its annual pancake breakfast to give $3,775 worth of equipment to the district's autism resource and education center

The Mentor Schools Foundation has used part of the money it raised last year to buy equipment for the Cardinals Autism Resource and Education School (CARES.) The charity paid $3,775 to buy a recumbent exercise bike, an elliptical trainer, and an exercise ball for CARES, which is the district's new educational, training and resource facility for children and young adults with autism. The money for the equipment came from the charity's annual Thanksgiving pancake breakfast at Yours Truly. Any additional money raised during the event will also go to support Mentor Schools and its students, according to the foundation. The Mentor Schools Foundation started in 1985 and, since its inception, has given more than $120,000 in grants to the school…

Year In Review: Changes In Mentor Schools

The Mentor Public School District closed one school in the spring and opened a new one in the fall

This was a year of big changes for the Mentor Schools District. It closed Headlands Elementary in Spring because of a shrinking school budget and aging population that no longer needs as many elementary schools. The district then renovated the building and reopened it with an entirely new purpose three months later. The Cardinal Autism Resource and Education School is a state-of-the-art facility for students with autism. CARES opened with nine students in two age groups: first through third grade and high school. LaPaglia plans to have 12 by January but it could be more if there's sufficient interest. The district intends to increase the number of students each school year until it reaches 42 in 2014. They will range in age from …

Annual Thanksgiving Pancake Breakfast Benefits Mentor Schools Foundation

Park of the breakfast's proceeds will go toward the Cardinals Autism Resource and Education School (CARES)

The Mentor Schools Foundation realizes that you have plenty of turkey, stuffing and pumpkin pie to eat this Thanksgiving. However, they ask -- if you knew it was for a good cause -- could you, perhaps, make room for a little breakfast? The foundation will host its 11th annual Thanksgiving pancake breakfast this Thursday morning at Yours Truly restaurant. In return for a voluntary donation, people can enjoy pancakes, sausage, coffee and orange juice. The proceeds from the last two breakfasts have helped sponsor the schools Science Olympiad teams and update the high school's planetarium. However, this year part of the money will go to the Cardinals Autism Resource and Education School (CARES.) CARES is the district's new educational, …

Mentor Schools Opens Cardinal Autism Resource and Education School

CARES opened this Monday with nine students

Brittani Mejac, a teacher at Mentor Schools' new Cardinal Autism Resource and Education School, sat on the floor of her classroom Wednesday afternoon. She showed a series of objects with different shapes and colors to her student Shane Duncan, who sat on a chair. "She's using them to assess his level of comprehension," CARES Director Christy LaPaglia explained as she watched unseen in one of the school's observation rooms. "She's also teaching him a lesson and reinforcing good behavior by getting him to sit still and pay attention. "She's brought herself down to his eye line," LaPaglia pointed out. CARES opened Monday and students, who all have autism, and the teachers are still getting to know each other; but LaPaglia said she's already …

Mentor School Board Approves Plan to Turn Headlands Into Autism Education Center

Renovations could begin as early as next week

Mentor Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to renovate the recently closed Headlands Elementary School into a school for children with autism. They approved the business plan for the new Cardinal Autism Resource and Education School during a meeting Tuesday. Superintendent Jacqueline Hoynes presented the idea to the Board during its May meeting. "With the school closing, we feel we have the opportunity to renovate the building to make it a state-of-the-art facility for students with autism," Hoynes said while proposing the project. According to the approved business plan, CARES will open October 2011 with enrollment of up to 12 students. Enrollment would then increase each year until there were 42 students by 2014. The renovated …
