Quarterback leads a Cardinals group of seven players on team

Trubisky, who threw for 3,845 yards and 41 touchdowns and rushed for 611 yards and 12 TDs, shared the honor with Wadsworth running back Jack Snowball. Win sets up rematch with St. Ignatius in Regional Final
The rematch is over. St. Ignatius is up ahead. And Mentor can put Saturday’s near disaster against Solon behind them. The top-seeded Cardinals almost squandered a four-touchdown lead but held on late to knock off the fifth-seeded Comets, 42-40, in a wild Division I, Region 1 semifinal matchup at Byers Field in Parma. Mentor improved to 11-1 on the season and will play another regular season foe in second-seeded St. Ignatius next Saturday in the regional final. The game’s site will be announced Sunday. The Cardinals defeated the Wildcats at home, 38-24, on Sept. 9. Solon’s season ends at 10-2. Despite committing five interceptions and losing two fumbles, the Cardinals defense held the Comets late to seal the win. Mentor kicker Tomislav …

Trubisky throws 3 TD passes to lead Cardinals
When you’re No. 1 on everybody’s charts, it’s best to keep the hits coming. Cardinals quarterback Mitch Trubisky threw for 259 yards and had touchdown throws to Warren Ashton, Cameron Kavan and Brandon Fritts as he led Mentor to a 38-7 victory over host Strongsville on Friday night. Kavan also had a rushing touchdown. Mentor (9-0 overall, 4-0 in the Northeast Ohio Conference) earned the top ranking of the Associated Press’ Division I poll this week with 28 first-place votes towering over former No. 1 Cincinnati Moeller who is the next closest at five votes and is ranked third. The Cardinals also remained No. 1 in the Plain Dealer’s football poll and gave no indication that anyone should change their vote. Coach Steve Trivisonno welcomes …

Mentor Cardinals controlled almost every aspect of 52-14 win
Mayfield controlled the clock. Mentor controlled just about everything else. Outmanned by the traveling spectacle that is the Cardinals’ five-receiver offense, the host Wildcats did their best to grind out first downs and hang in during an interdivision battle between Northeast Ohio Conference teams. It worked for a half. Eventually, though, Mentor tightened the screws on defense, its offense kept adding to its highlight reel and Mayfield was left, well … reeling. The Cardinals prevailed, 52-14. “Methodical” was the operative word for the Wildcats’ offense through the first two quarters. In the first half, Mayfield (1-3) ran 48 plays to just 19 for Mentor (4-0), had a lopsided advantage in time of possession, 20:03 to 3:57, and pounded out…

Mentor racked up more than 600 yards to remain undefeated
When the going gets tough, the tough keep throwing. After Mentor quarterback Mitch Trubisky staked the Cardinals to an early 14-point lead against visiting St. Ignatius on Friday night, the Wildcats' secondary put the clamps on the Cards, picking off Trubisky three times in the first half (and four times total in the game). Undeterred, Trubisky kept throwing (and throwing), and a game with a few throws to forget turned into another night to remember for Mentor. The Cardinals racked up 608 yards of offense and pulled away in the second half to beat St. Ignatius for the second straight year, 38-24. Trubisky completed 28 of 44 passes for 469 yards and three touchdowns. Even after a few turnovers, Mentor coach Steve Trivisonno wasn’t about to …
