Now, local businesses are sponsoring the second annual prom fashion show, Brandon's PROMise, to raise money for his foundation. The show will be from 7 to 9 p.m. this Thursday at Memorial Middle School. Marcy Hudson, the owner of Expressions Bridal & Formal, helped organize the event. Today we look at the five most-read stories in Failrawn-Bath Patch this year.
Yesterday, the Copley shooting tragedy dominated our top 10 list. Today, it's a mix of stories from bullying to Lebron James to a call for snow for Christmas. Below are our top five most-read stories of 2011, starting with No. 5: 5. Columnist Jennie Narraway takes our No. 5 spot with her piece on the YouTube video of a 16-year-old, overweight Australian boy being bullied by a younger, smaller boy at the Chifley College Dunheved’s Campus in New South Wales, Australia. She posed the question: "If all else fails, would you tell your child to use violence to defend themselves against a bully?" 4. Still captivated by the tragedy in Copley, readers wanted to know the name of the second teen who was killed during the shooting rampage on a Sunday…

Brandon Shima's football teammates and about 300 friends, family and community members gathered Saturday afternoon to commemorate the anniversary of his death
Last year, Keith Shima went into Mentor football team's locker room and told them he didn't need them to win as long as they left it all out on the field. This was just after Shima's son -- Brandon Shima, a free safety for the Cardinals -- had died of natural causes after suffering from a reoccurring MRSA infection. Saturday afternoon Brandon Shima's coaches and teammates, as well as more than 300 friends, family and community members gathered at Jerome T. Osborne Stadium to commemorate the anniversary of his death. Keith Shima told the Cardinals that he had planned to give them the same message this year -- play your hardest and it doesn't matter if you win or lose -- but then his son's voice popped into his head. "You are to tell those …

Speaker hopes to inspire Mentor students with the story of his niece, who was the first person killed during the shootings at Columbine High School
Anne Frank had a big influence on Rachel Scott, Rachel's uncle Larry Scott said. Coincidentally, the two ended up having a lot in common. Both died young under tragic circumstances. Anne died in a concentration camp during World War II. Rachel was the first person murdered during the Columbine High School shootings. Both have helped millions -- even after they died -- through their words. Like Ann, Rachel left behind a diary in which she wrote about her desire to "create a chain reaction of kindness." Now her family and several other speakers travel across the United States and other countries sharing Rachel's story through the Rachel's Challenge nonprofit organization. Larry Scott visited Memorial and Ridge Middle Schools Tuesday and will…

Each week the Mentor Patch Moms Council answers a question on parenthood posed to them by readers or another member of council. This week's question: A Minneapolis mom has been banned from her son's school and his bus stop for the rest of the year after confronting her a bus driver and two boys who had been picking on her son. (Find the full story here.) The mom said the bus driver knew about the bullying but didn't take action. So today we're asking you to put yourself in someone else's place. If your kids were being bullied like that and no one would help, what would you do? And do you think it was right for the school to ban the mom from both the building and her son's bus stop? Melanie Majikas: I think it's hard to know what to do. On …

Each semester, the district gives the board an anti-bullying report. This report's information came from the 2010-2011 school year's second semester. Porter said Mentor Schools had nine reported bullying incidents at Mentor High School, six at the district's middle schools and 10 at its elementary schools. Ohio Supreme Court will hear arguments pertaining to the Eric Mohat lawsuit Wednesday
The Ohio Supreme Court will hear arguments pertaining to the Eric Mohat lawsuit Wednesday. Eric Mohat was a a 17-year-old Mentor High School student who killed himself March 27, 2007. Eric's parents, Janis and William Mohat, filed a lawsuit against Mentor Schools after his death. In the suit, the Mohats said that Eric killed himself because he was bullied and harassed at school, and school employees who knew about the bullying did not do enough to stop it. The suit was filed in federal court, and the Ohio Supreme Court will not hear arguments about the whole suit. Instead, the state court will focus on one specific legal question. That question is whether a wrongful death suit filed on behalf of a dead person before his or her estate is …

Schools administration shows video on anti-bullying efforts, recognizes transportation department during board meeting
Mentor Schools administration building was packed Tuesday night for the Board of Education meeting. Parents, students and school employees filled every available chair at the beginning of the meeting. Most of the crowd came for one of two items on the agenda – the presentation of an anti-bullying video and the recognition of the district's traffic department. Superintendent Jacqueline Hoynes started her report by showing a video that outlined the district's anti-bullying program. The video did not reveal anything new that the district has not said before, but it did show many students and school principals talking about the tenets of its anti-bullying program. The video also featured the school's Give a Hand, Take a Hand program that helps…
