Five Mentor High students and a Lake Catholic Cougar will receive scholarships from the Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce this year
The Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce announced its scholarship recipients Tuesday during its monthly meeting at LaMalfa Centre. The Don-Mar Krueger academic scholarships went to Kara Jankowski of Lake Catholic High School and Sarah Perry, Branden Piks and Gregory Ritchey of Mentor High School. Meanwhile, Cardinals Zachery Lewandowski and Joseph Zupan received the Marie S. Pucak Career Technical Education scholarship. The scholarship recipients attended the Chamber meeting, which gave the members an opportunity to learn more about the students.

Teresa Teskac had been voted the Valentine's Queen by her friends Tuesday afternoon at Heartland of Mentor. After her coronation, she was asked if she had any romantic advice for the students from Mentor High School who had visited the assisted living center for the Valentine's dance. Teskac took the microphone, paused to think and then said, "Do well in school... and don't marry too quick." Both the students and seniors laughed with Teskac. Then the music came on and the dance floor filled again. Students from the National Honor Society, basketball team and the early education program came to Heartland to celebrate Valentine's Day. Piks became the first 2-time 3-point competition champion in Arby's Classic history
Mentor Cardinal Branden Piks already earned his place in the Arby's Classic's record book the first time he competed in the tournament's 3-point competition last year. Piks scored 27 points, breaking the previous record that was held by Ray Allen of the Boston Celtics. Then he and the Cardinals returned to the Classic this year. In addition to earning second place at the basketball tournament which draws talent from across the country, Piks also defended his 3-point title. While Piks did not break his own record -- he scored 20 points -- he did become the first 2-time, 3-point winner in Arby's Classic history.
