United Way Of Lake County Still Donating To Boy Scouts' Programs

The Cuyahoga County branch of the United Way recently stated its intent to not support the Boy Scouts over the Scouts' practice of banning open or avowed homosexuals

Unlike its neighbor in Cuyahoga County, the Lake County branch of the United Way will continue to donate to Boy Scouts' programs. The United Way of Lake County Board of Directors voted at their Tuesday meeting to continue funding programs through the Boy Scouts of the Greater Western Reserve Council. The local chapter of the United Way decides what local programs should receive funding through its Evaluation and Investment Process, in which volunteers appraise programs and then suggest if UWLC should donate to it. Each program is examined for its efficiency, effectiveness and its impact on the local community. Last year, the United Way of Lake County allocated the Greater Western Reserve Council $74,000 for four programs – Cubs, Scouts, …

Eagle Scout Candidate Repairs Fence at James A. Garfield National Historic Site

Austin Reynolds worked for several months on the project

Even the fence at James A. Garfield National Historic Site has historical importance. While it isn't the same fence that ringed the President Garfield's family farm while he lived there, it is a replica of the one erected during his 1880 presidential campaign. Recently, Austin Reynolds, a member of local Boy Scout Troop 885 and an Eagle Scout candidate, took on the task of repairing and painting the park's white picket fence. Reynolds worked for several months to acquire needed wood and paint for the project and obtain National Park Service permission to work on the fence. Commonwealth Lumber and Sherwin Williams Paints helped on the project, as well. Reynolds is a 17-year-old at Willoughby South High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop…

Mentor Cemetery's Pump House Gets New Life

Mentor teen renovates 157-year-old building as Eagle Scout project

It took Bryan Daly more than 200 hours of labor and $4,500 in building materials to renovate the 157-year-old Pump House at Mentor Municipal Cemetery. Bryan, 15, a Mentor High School student and Boy Scout of Troop 280, decided to rebuild the aging pump house for his Eagle Scout project. During a dedication ceremony Wednesday afternoon, Bryan was quick to point out that his ambitious project would not have been possible without the help and support from his family, friends, Mentor city officials, Troop 280 Boy Scouts and leaders, as well as several businesses. "As soon as I started on the preparation work for this Eagle Scout project, I realized it was going to be a lot of work," Bryan told a group of about 40 people who attended the …
