As renewal levies, they would not raise taxes if passed

The Mentor Schools Board of Education decided to put two renewal levies on the May 2013 ballot during a work session Thursday afternoon. The renewals, which would not raise taxes if passed, are for an operating levy that brings in about $15 million per year and a 1-mill permanent improvement levy that brings in about $1 million per year. The permanent improvement levy is set to expire at the end of this year. The operating levy would expire at the end of 2014. The Mentor Public Schools district has previously said that, according to the its 5-year financial projection, it needs to pass three levies in the next three years -- two renewals and a new one -- or it will face a $30 million deficit by the 2015-2016 school year. Consequently, it …

I am not sure I understand what you mean by done deal? What is a done deal? Are you saying that this won't be the end of it? If that is the case then I agree. Most districts will have to have a school levy on the ballot every so many years. Costs are rising while house values are decreasing.   more ›

Assistant Superintendent William Porter discussed Mentor Schools' safety efforts at the most recent Board of Education meeting

The tragic shooting last month at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut has caused all school districts -- even those whose safety plans have never lapsed -- to take a hard look at their security procedures. Mentor Schools Assistant Superintendent updated the Board of Education and Mentor parents on their district's safety and security measures during the Board meeting Tuesday evening. (The update, in its entirety, is attached to this story as a video in case you would prefer to simply watch it.) Porter said that, even before the shooting at Sandy Hook, the district had updated the district's safety plans in several of its buildings. It also added cameras in the district's middle schools and 2-way radios to several of its other …

World War II veteran Bob Zonneville praised the younger generation, calling them "much brighter, quicker than our generation"

It has become a cliche for the older generation to denigrate the youth. Common complaints begin with "Kids these days" or "they don't make them like they used to." But World War II veteran and Mentor resident Bob Zonneville doesn't buy into all of that. Mentor Public Schools recognized Zonneville -- the winner of two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star -- during its Board of Education meeting Tuesday. When Zonneville had the opportunity to speak, he didn't talk about the war or even service. He talked about today's youth. "I have the greatest respect for our young people," he said. "This younger generation is so much brighter, quicker than our generation. I think we seem to forget that sometimes." Zonneville added the students of Mentor High …
