Watch: Snow Doesn't Scare Off Golfers At Lake County Chili Open

More than 200 golfers gathered for the annual fundraiser, the proceeds of which go to the United Way of Lake Conty

The snow and cold did not deter more than golfers at the eighth annual Chili Open Saturday morning at Black Brook Golf Course. Money from the event goes to the United Way of Lake County. In its eight-year history, the Chili Open has made more than $10,000 for the local chapter of the United Way. The event is co-hosted by Mentor Parks & Recreation and the United Way of Lake County. United Way employees were also at the open selling tickets for the charity's Super Raffle, in which people can win prizes ranging from a new car to a 5-day cruise.

United Way, City of Mentor Host Snowy Golf Tournament

Players can still register to play golf in the snow Jan. 26 at Black Brook Golf Course

The annual Lake County Chili Open is one of the rare outdoor events that becomes more popular when it snows. So make sure you get your tickets now before it sells out. More than 200 golfers come out each year to play winter golf at Black Brook Golf Course. They swing through a course of nine snowy holes -- driving over snowdrifts and putting on frozen greens -- that range from 65 to 100 yards in length. They play with neon orange balls. That way, they don't get lost in the snow. Afterward, they warm up in the clubhouse with a big bowl of chili. Black Brook clears tee areas and greens, but golfers have to hack through the snow anywhere else on the course. If the course is not covered with snow on Jan. 26, golfers can play the normal yardage…

Black Brook Holding Grand Opening For New Practice Course Today

Celebration will include a closest-to-the-pin and putting contests

Black Brook Golf Course opened its redesigned practice center last month and the city is hosting a Grand Opening today to celebrate. The festivities begin with a dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. A closest-to-the-pin and putting contest will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and anybody can get a free 10-minute lesson with one of the course's golf pros. All events are free but people will need to register in advance for their lesson by calling 440-951-0010. The new practice center features artificial and a 1.5-acre natural tee, an artificial tee that can be used during bad weather, target greens, an uneven lie area and even sand bunkers on which golfers can practice. The city of Mentor has owned the golf course since 2005. It had hoped to …

Black Brook Golf Course Opens New Practice Center

Practice center has artificial and natural tees, target greens, uneven lie area and even sand bunkers to practice on

A moment more than a year in the making has finally come -- the Black Brook Golf Course has opened its redesigned practice center. The center opened Saturday and it features artificial and a 1.5-acre natural tee, an artificial tee that can be used during bad weather, target greens, an uneven lie area and even sand bunkers on which golfers can practice. "It's great," Black Brook Manager and PGA Pro Tim Ausperk said. "We're getting a lot of people out there practicing and we've gotten a lot of good comments." The city of Mentor has owned the golf course since 2005. It had hoped to open the center last spring but record levels of rain slowed the project. "We had such a bad spring last year that it set us back a couple of months," Ausperk said…

Last time I played this course, it was beautiful and very well maintained. I LOVED this course, the people, so many great memories lost. I haven't played the course since the City of Mentor took over but prior to that, the course was run by golf pro Jack Austin for over 30 years and prior to that, Jack's father, John Austin, managed the course. The course was always in pristine shape with the …   more ›

United Way, City of Mentor Host Snowy Golf Tournament

Players can still register to play golf in the snow Jan. 21 at Black Brook Golf Course

Golfers will have the rare opportunity to tee off in the snow during the seventh annual Chili Open Jan. 21 at Black Brook Golf Course. Those who want to play should register soon because the Chili Open is one of those rare activities where snow attracts -- instead of deters -- participants. Last year, more than 250 golfers enjoyed nine holes on Mentor's winter wonder-course and a warm bowl of chili afterward. Black Brook clears tee areas and greens, but golfers will have to hack through the snow anywhere else on the course. Money from the event goes to the United Way of Lake County. In its seven-year history, the Chili Open has made more than $10,000 for the local chapter of the United Way. It costs $18 to play and that coves the price of …
