Stacey Robinson's attorney said stress from losing his son, as well as financial pressures, caused him to make a bad decision
"I'm not a bad person," Stacey Robinson told Lake County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Gibson. "I just did a bad thing that day." The day to which Robinson referred to is Aug. 29, 2012, when he robbed the PNC Bank in Mentor. Robinson had previously pleaded guilty to the bank robbery and was sentenced Wednesday in Gibson's court. Robinson's attorney, Assistant Lake County Public Defender Margaret Campbell, said stress led Robinson to make a bad decision. His son had died from a gunshot earlier that year, she said. Mentor man Stacey Robinson has admitted to robbing the PNC Bank in Mentor. Robinson, 46, pleaded guilty to one count of robbery in Lake County Common Pleas Judge Joseph Gibson's court room. His sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 9. Robinson faces between one and three years in prison. The bank was robbed on Aug. 29. Robinson entered the bank, wearing a black leather hat, striped collared shirt and dark colored pants, police said. He handed the teller a note, demanding money. Mentor Police have identified Stacey Robinson as the man who is suspected of robbing the PNC Bank Wednesday afternoon. Witnesses recognized Robinson, 46, as a previous customer at the bank, Mentor Police Sgt. Richard Slovenkay said. Robinson lives in Mentor in the Mentor Mall Village Apartments so policemen began checking the area for him. Officers spotted Robinson about an hour after the robbery so they stopped and arrested him. Robinson has been charged with robbery and will be arraigned 8 a.m. Thursday in Mentor Municipal Court. Robinson is also being investigated as a possible suspect in the Dollar Bank robbery, which occurred this June in Mentor. Mentor Police have arrested a man who is though to have robbed the PNC Bank on Mentor Avenue earlier this afternoon. The Mentor man, whose name has not been released yet, was arrested after an officer spotted him driving on Mentor Avenue near the intersection with Cadle Road shortly after the robbery, Mentor Police Lt. Tom Powers said. The robbery occurred at 1 p.m. today. After the Dollar Bank in Mentor was robbed for the second time in two years Tuesday, Mentor City Councilman Ray Kirchner sent a letter to his fellow council members. The subject -- bank security. "I hate to sound like a broken record but I am truly tired at the ease in which our banks allow themselves to be robbed," Kirchner wrote. "I am at the point where I am considering introducing legislation that would order banks to offer a security plan that would put guards or other deterrents inside their banks to eliminate the present policy of letting robbers do as they please and let us take care of their problem once the theives walk out the door." Mentor Police are investigating a robbery that occurred at 10:43 a.m. Tuesday at the Dollar Bank on Mentor Avenue. A black man in his 50s handed a note to the teller, demanding money, Mentor Police Lt. Ken Zbiegien said. The teller gave the robber money and the man fled from the bank on foot. The robber did not show a weapon and nobody was hurt. The suspect is described as about 5 feet, 6 inches tall with a medium build, according to the Mentor Police Facebook page. Theodore Crawford -- the second of two men convicted of robbing banks in Mentor and Lyndhurst -- was sentenced Wednesday in federal court to 57 months in prison. Crawford and his partner Raymond Spears were arrested in August and indicted by a federal grand jury on multiple charges. Crawford, 21, of South Euclid, pleaded guilty to charges of armed bank robbery, conspiracy to commit bank robbery and aiding and abetting on Jan. 17 in U.S. Federal Judge James Gwin's courtroom. Alex Harper was sentenced to eight years in prison Wednesday morning for robbing the First National Bank in Mentor. Federal Court Judge Solomon Oliver also ordered Harper to pay $4,673 in restitution to the bank. Harper, 27, of Richmond Heights, robbed the bank in June. Prosecutors say Harper gave the bank teller a note, demanding money, and then fled. Police arrested him after a lengthy car and foot chase through Mentor, Willoughby, Wickliffe and Euclid. The investigation was conducted by the FBI and Mentor Police Department. Alex Harper was previously convicted of robbing five banks in 2005, including the First National Bank in Mentor. Two Cleveland men have pleaded guilty to robbing a pair of banks, including the Home Savings Bank in Mentor. Raymond Spears 22, and Theodore Crawford, 21, were arrested in August and indicted by a federal grand jury on multiple charges. Spears and Crawford are also accused of robbing the Chase Bank in Lyndhurst four days before the Mentor robbery. In both robberies, the robber claimed to have a bomb. In Lyndhurst, only one person – thought to be Spears – entered the bank with a fake explosive and demanded money. In Mentor, two people came into the bank.
