Planning Commission Approves Rezoning For Cleveland Clinic Medical Center, Audi Site Plan

A split Commission also approved plans for the Red Wine & Brew tasting room and patio

The Mentor Planning Commission had a lengthy agenda with some high-profile businesses on it Thursday night, including the Cleveland Clinic, Penske Automotive Group, Melt and Great Lakes Mall. The Commission unanimously approved Cleveland Clinic's request to rezone 47 acres at the southeast corner of Norton Parkway and Center Street from a "lifestyle center" designation to a "medical campus." A "medical campus" zone can be used for diverse reasons. It can include everything from physician's offices to a full medical center with a helicopter pad. Cleveland Clinic has been coy about its intentions regarding the property and continued to be so at the meeting. When Commission Member Katherine Cimperman asked Brian Smith, the director of …

So the CCF doesn't have to show the city the ideas they have for the area? You KNOW they have an idea of what they are putting there so why not make them share it with the city? Playing coy about the plans doesn't instill confidence in what they are going to do. This is across from a residential community.   more ›

Shooting Range Legislation, Cleveland Clinic & Audi on Planning Commission's Agenda

Lake National Bank and Melt also have items up for consideration

The Mentor Planning Commission has a lengthy agenda waiting for it when its members meet 7 p.m. today at City Hall. Moreover, that agenda has some high-profile businesses on it. For example, the Cleveland Clinic has requested that 47 acres at the southeast corner of Norton Parkway and Center Street be rezoned from a "lifestyle center" designation to a "medical campus." A "medical campus" zone can be used for diverse reasons, said Ron Traub, the city of Mentor's director of business and economic development. It can include everything from physician's offices to a full medical center with a helicopter pad. The Clinic has been coy about its intentions for the property. "We are currently in a due diligence process which could position us to …

Planning Commission Approves Permit, Site Plan For Audi Dealership

Some neighbors of the development site expressed concerns about the dealership

The Mentor Planning Commission approved both the permit and preliminary site plan for a proposed Audi dealership on Market Street during its meeting Thursday night. As previously reported, Penske is looking to relocate its Willoughby Audi dealership to 8599 Market St., which will bring about 50 jobs to the city and generate about $30 million in sales. The proposed dealership would be 23,000 square feet and built on a vacant six acres just north of Outback Steakhouse. The property borders residential neighborhoods on the lot's north and west sides, so the Penske has said it will build a 25-foot landscape buffer on those borders. However, some Mentor residents came to the meeting and said they were concerned about potential light, noise and…

Melt, Audi On Planning Commission's Agenda Tonight

Billy's Martini Bar is also looking to move in Mentor

The Mentor Planning Commission has some big names on its agenda when it meets at 7 p.m. today at City Hall. For example, Penske Automotive will request a permit to build an Audi dealership at 8599 Market St. and show the Commission its preliminary site plan. The proposed dealership would be 23,000 square feet and built on a vacant six acres just north of Outback Steakhouse. The property borders residential neighborhoods on the lot's north and west sides, so the Penske has said it will build a 25-foot landscape buffer on those borders. As previously reported, Penske is looking to relocate its Willoughby Audi dealership to Market Street, which will bring about 50 jobs to the city. The city of Mentor sold the property to Penske for $500,000 …

City Of Mentor Presents Deer Hunting Ordinance To Council

The city suggests legalizing bow hunting in certain parts of Mentor

Mentor City Manager Kenneth Filipiak presented an ordinance to City Council Monday night that would, if passed, legalize the bow hunting of deer in Mentor. The deer population has been a popular and occasionally divisive subject in the city for awhile. Earlier this year, Council gave the city administration permission to pursue the permits needed to get a Deer Management Plan approved by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. This latest ordinance is only part of the city's ultimate plan and not its totality, Filipiak explained. "This is our first step in reducing the deer population in the city," Filipiak said. Council did not vote on the ordinance Monday night. Instead, they will discuss it more during a work session before their next…

Sandra, you are correct that Mentor has cleared and developed most of its vacant land and woodlots needlessly, but my guess is that the neighborhood you live in probably required some land to be cleared when it was built. So it is ok for you to live in a house that took land away from the deer, but not the people who have followed since? The truth about deer is, with no natural predators, woods …   more ›

Audi Dealership Probably Coming To Mentor After All

After a stalled deal in the Old Village, Penske Automotive looking to construct an Audi dealership on Market Street

Patience appears to have paid off for the city of Mentor. The city is close to finalizing a deal with Penske Automotive that would have them relocating their Willoughby Audi dealership to Market Street. At Monday's City Council meeting, Council is scheduled to vote on a land sale to Penske. If the sale goes through, Penske will build a 22,000-square-foot Audi dealership that would bring about 50 jobs to the city. The roots for this deal started back when Penske was talking about moving the Audi dealership to the former Honda of Mentor site, City Manager Kenneth Filipiak said. Penske had initially discussed opening an Audi, and maybe even an Infiniti, dealership in the Old Village. However, while scouting possible locations, the city also …

Mentor Planning Commission Approves Amending Architectural Design Standards for Old Village

Commission's decision paves the way for the opening of a new Audi dealership

The Mentor Planning Commission Thursday unanimously approved an amendment that loosens the city’s architectural design standards, which will mostly likely pave the way for the opening of a new Audi dealership on Mentor Avenue. In February, the planning commission met with Penske Automotive Group representatives who discussed a proposal to open an Audi dealership at the former Honda dealership. However, the proposed Audi dealership would feature glass and aluminum in its design, a contemporary look that differs from the traditional look that the city is trying to cultivate in the Old Village neighborhood through its architectural design standards. The dealership’s contemporary design  is required by Audi's international branding standards…

Planning Commission Discusses Amending Architectural Standards for Old Village

Planning Commission mulled an amendment that would make it easier for an Audi dealership to set up shop in the Old Village neighborhood

Mentor Planning Commission considered changing the Old Village neighborhood's zoning guidelines during its meeting Thursday night. The change would have made it easier for an Audi dealership to set up shop in the Old Village, but the Commission decided the proposed amendment was too unclear and put off voting on it until after it could be discussed more. The Penske Automotive Group has talked about remodeling the former Honda property on Mentor Avenue and making it an Audi dealership. The only hangup: Audi's high-tech look could potentially clash with the traditional feel that the city is trying to cultivate in the Old Village neighborhood. To accommodate Penske, Economic Development Director Ron Traub suggested loosening the neighborhood'…
