The Lake Effect Comic Book Convention returned to Mentor this Sunday for its third year. It was hosted by the Atlas Cinemas theater at Great Lakes Mall for the first time. The featured guest was Avengers artist and the creator of Liberty Meadows Frank Cho. Other comics writers and artists at the convention included: The convention is the brainchild of Comics and Friends, the comics shop at the Great Lakes Mall.

The Lake Effect Comic Book Convention returns to Mentor from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Sunday and it's bringing with it contests, prizes and high-profile industry professionals. The con is the creation of Joe Lovece, the manager of Comics and Friends, and it will be held this year in the Atlas Cinemas theater at Great Lakes Mall. The featured guest will be Avengers artist and the creator of Liberty Meadows Frank Cho. Cho joked on his web site that this was a rare trip to Ohio for him because "because there’s nothing there but farmlands, corn and crystal-meth labs." And, while Cho was joking about the corn and crystal meth, he wasn't kidding about not making many appearances in the area so this is a rare opportunity for his fans to meet him…

What's sweeter than taking your sweetheart to a movie on Valentine's Day? Raising money for the United Way of Lake County while you do it. On Feb. 14, people can go see a movie at the Great Lakes theater, only pay the matinee price of $6.75 and a dollar will be donated to the United Way. There will be an additional charge for 3-D movies. The local chapter of United Way began its annual fundraising campaign in August. Money raised during the campaign benefits 74 partner programs that the nonprofit organization funds. These programs focus on senior citizens, health and human services, children, families and basic needs.

People can catch a movie on the cheap and support the United Way of Lake County all at once. Atlas Cinemas has paired with the local chapter of the United Way for a pair of movie nights. On Jan. 24, people can go see a movie at the Diamond Center theater, only pay the matinee price of $6.75 and a dollar will be donated to the United Way.
