Watch: American Cancer Society Kicks Off Relay For Life At Great Lakes Mall

The Relay has raised about $2.7 million in Lake County since 1996; American Cancer Society hopes to break the threshold to $3 million this year

The American Cancer Society kicked off its Relay for Life campaign Saturday afternoon at Great Lakes Mall. Molly Smith, a community income development manager for American Cancer Society, said the Relay has raised about $2.7 million in Lake County since 1996. The ACS hopes to cross the $3 million threshold this year. Volunteers honored cancer survivors Saturday and talked about the programs that the Relay helps fund -- programs like Road to Recovery; Look Good, Feel Better and the CPS-3 study. Dr. Eain Murphy -- a researcher at Cleveland Clinic, whose reseach was first funded by the American Cancer Society -- thanked everyone who came to the kickoff. Relay for Life Will Kick Off Campaign at Great Lakes Mall

The American Cancer Society starts its annual fundraiser at Mentor mall Saturday

The American Cancer Society will kick off its Relay for Life campaign Saturday afternoon at Great Lakes Mall. The kickoff includes an hour-long Zumbathon from 1 to 2 p.m. (Registration begins at 12:15 p.m.) It costs $10 to participate with the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. Then, from 2:15 p.m. to 2:45 p.m., there will be a special kickoff program in the Macy's department store concourse where they will honor cancer survivors and get people psyched for this year's Relay for Life. GALLERY: Relay for Life at Lake Catholic High School

The 22-hour event featured 32 teams who walked and raised funds to find a cure for cancer

People partied and camped out all night Saturday and half of Sunday at Lake High School for the annual Relay for Life of Central Lake County. The event featured teams that took turns walking around the school track and raising funds for the American Cancer Society that will support cancer research and treatment. Auctions were held to raise more money and people were entertained by bands and activities like volleyball and hula hoop contests. Events were also held at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Teams had raised $83,000 before the event, American Cancer Society income development representative Amanda Uterhark said. By the end of the event on Sunday, officials hoped to raise $106,000. Last year, the event raised more than $100,000.

Relay For Life Returns To Lake Catholic This Weekend

Event will include candlelight remembrance ceremony, as well as fun events like dance parties and midnight volleyball

Relay for Life returns this Saturday and Sunday to Lake Catholic and St. John Vianney Catholic Church. Twenty-nine teams will raise money for the American Cancer Society that goes twoard cancer research and treatment. The event also celebrates the lives of people who have battled and survived cancer, as well as remembers loved ones lost. The event kicks off at noon Saturday with the opening ceremony and cancer survivors taking the first lap at 12:30 p.m. Throughout the afternoon there will be fun events like hula hoop and bubble gum blowing contests, water balloon tosses and potato sack races, as well as music from local bands. Mentor Panera Raising Money For Breast Cancer Research And Treatment

A portion of the proceeds from every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold will go to the American Cancer Society

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Panera is commemorating it by raising money for cancer research and treatment through the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program. Paneras across the region, including Mentor's, will sell Pink Ribbon Bagels that are shaped like their iconic namesakes. A portion of the proceeds from every Pink Ribbon Bagel sold will go to local breast cancer charities. Also, for each baker's dozen of bagels that Panera sells, one dollar will go to American Cancer Society. People need not even buy anything from Panera to support the cause. Cancer Survivors, Friends, Family Join Forces for Relay for Life

Nearly 80 cancer survivors gathered at American Cancer Society's Relay For Life to celebrate and remember

Bob Schlappal of Mentor sat quietly at the table holding a special package in his arms, his third grandson, Chase, who was born nearly a month ago. “I look forward to this every year,” said Schlappal. “We always make new friends and the family gets involved. It’s a very rewarding and great experience.” Schlappal, and his wife, Terry, were among nearly 80 cancer survivors who participated in the  Relay For Life held all day Saturday and into Sunday morning on the grounds of Lake Catholic High School and St. John Vianney’s Catholic Church. Video: Hopkins Elementary Raises Money to Help Cancer Research

The school raised more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society during Relay for Life

Hopkins Elementary School raised more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society during its Relay for Life event this afternoon. The students have spent the last two weeks gathering donations. They also gave their own money so they could put pictures on the walls of the school, remembering loved ones who have had cancer. However, the Hopkins Relay is only a precursor for the Mentor High School Relay for Life event, which starts 3 p.m. this Saturday at Lake Catholic High School. People can come to the event, buy food, play games and donate to the American Cancer Society.

The American Cancer Society starts its annual fundraiser at Mentor mall Saturday

The American Cancer Society will kick off its Relay for Life campaign Saturday afternoon at Great Lakes Mall. The kickoff will feature a re-enactment of a local Relay, complete with opening and closing ceremonies, the honoring of cancer survivors, condiment races and a beauty pageant for men. The kickoff is free and will be from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m. in the Macy's department store concourse. The Relay for Life helps fund the American Cancer Society. The society, in turn, funds cancer research and helps people with the disease get well and stay well. The society will also enroll people in an unprecedented cancer study at the kickoff.
