A great (and free) group text message tool for teachers, coaches, and leaders

I am a coach for my daughters softball team and I like to remind parents of upcoming games and practices. It is also very helpful to send messages to everyone at once about breaking news like canceling a game or practice due to weather. Everyone has their phones with them all the time these days so a text message is the most dependable way to quickly get a note out to everyone. Remind101 is a great little tool that makes it quick and easy to send messages to a group and manage the distribution list.

Getting Started

  1. Signup for a free account at http://remind101.com (it is quick and easy).
  2. Define a "class" by giving it a name and a class code.
  3. Next you will see instructions for adding people to the class. It is as simple as texting the class code to a phone number that remind101 uses for managing class lists or emailing a message to an email address at remind101.com.
Adding People to Your List
  1. You can print the instructions and distribute them to your team or just tell them what to do.
  2. They send the text or email and will get a message in return that gives them some instructions to finish the signup process (also quick and easy).
  3. You see people on your remind101 dashboard as they sign up.
Sending Messages
  1. Type the message that goes to everyone.
  2. Select a date and time to send the message or send it immediately.
  3. Send the message and everyone gets it in a few seconds.
Using the scheduling feature lets you do things like at the start of the season schedule a game reminder the evening before each game all season long.

About safety and privacy.  Individuals control whether they join the group and Remind101 does not allow the teacher/coach/leader to see the phone information for individuals. Messages are sent to the entire group at once with no ability to communicate with individuals. This addresses safety and privacy issues that should concern parents in todays online world.
