Summer Camp Guide For Mentor

Enrollment is starting soon for many summer camps. Here's a selection of summer camps offered in Mentor

The city of Mentor Recreation Department offers more than 100 different summer camps on topics as diverse as fencing, application programming and theater.

You can read about them all here. Any of them can be registered for online.

Here are some details on some of the more unique ones.

Name: Battle Bots
Type of camp: Science
Cost: $175 for residents, $190 for nonresidents
Where: Woods Room -- Mentor Community Center
When: July 15-19
Deadline for registration: July 9
Details: Learn more about engineering and design in this hands-on course! You'll work in groups of 3 - 4 to construct a fully functioning battle bot using regular household items (provided). Then see whose bot can withstand the battle as you challenge other teams and each other!

Name: Nature Survivor Camp
Type of camp: Outdoor
Cost: $63 for residents, $84 for nonresidents
Where: Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve
When: July 22-26
Deadline for registration: July 17
Details: Nature Survivor Camp will show you all the cool things the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve holds. Spend the week in the woods, learning to make your own shelter, the basics of orienteering and how to build a small fire. Then find and identify some of nature's edibles found in the preserve and learn to use them in healthy natural snacks. While camp is held during the day, a Tuesday evening hike is included so you can learn more about the night-time lagoons

Name: Grandparent & Me Camp
Type of camp: Science
Cost: $49 for residents, $63 for nonresidents; price of camp is per person and both grandparent child must register.
Where: Wildwood Cultural Center
When: July 24-26
Deadline for registration: July 17
Details: Grandparents and their grandkids can explore summer camp together in this intergenerational camp experience. Meet at Wildwood Cultural Center the first two days and participate in games and activities, create a variety of arts and crafts, and go exploring in outdoor adventures together. The last day will be spent at the Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve and Marina where kayaking, nature walks, a hayride and campfire will complete the experience.

Name: Camp 911
Type of camp: Fun and safety
Cost: $75 for residents, $85 for nonresidents
Where: Mentor Beach Park
When: July 22-26
Deadline for registration: July 16
Details: Experience what its really like to be a firefighter or a police officer. The camp is run by full-time firefighters and police officers. You will learn about CPR, practice first aid banding, get to use a fire extinguisher on a rea; fire, put on the gear firefighters use, learn about internet safety and crime prevention as well as having fun too.

Name: Making an iPhone App
Type of camp: Science
Cost: $175 for residents, $190 for nonresidents
Where: Woods Room -- Mentor Community Center
When: July 15-19
Deadline for registration: July 10
Details: This Tek lab will explore the process of creating iPhone apps. Participants will acquire the skills of basic programming, digital animation and digital sound mixing to create fun and exciting games on their device. You will learn the logical sequence of a computer program and how loops, variables, and constants are used in an app sequence. Bring an iPhone, if possible.

Cost: $70 for residents per week, $85 for nonresidents per week
Where: Wildwood Cultural Center
When: June 17 through Aug. 16

Details: At Camp Wildwood, your child will learn, grow and have fun in a diverse, exciting and enjoyable day camp setting. Children will enjoy the sunshine and fresh air as they explore nature and their environment. Campers will take part in new and imaginative experiences in arts and crafts and games. Each camp session will have different themes and activities so there is always a new experience waiting for your child. Camp counselors have been with the program for several years and have experience working with children. Student aids will assist the camp staff. Children must be currently enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade. Each child needs to bring a lunch and dress appropriately for the weather. Fee includes all materials and a camp T-shirt

Name: Garfield Play Camp
Type of camp: Outdoor
Cost: $50 for residents per week, $60 for nonresidents per week
Where: Garfield Park
When: June 17 through Aug. 16

Details: Just for preschool age kids, Garfield Play Camp provides organized play and activities designed to provide campers an opportunity to interact with children their own age in the exciting atmosphere of Garfield Park and Pool. Play Camp includes games, arts and crafts, stories, nature activities, and swimming. Camp is directed by a certified classroom teacher who is assisted by high school and college students at a ratio of 1 counselor to 8 campers. Garfield Pool staff assist counselors at the pool.

Name: Boating Camp
Type of camp: Boating
Cost: $122 for residents, $138 for nonresidents
Where: Mentor Lagoons Nature Preserve
When: July 8-12
Deadline for registration: July 2
Details: During this hands-on boating program, students learn the basics of how to paddle a kayak and canoe, row a row boat, sail a sailboat, and drive a small electric motor boat all in one action packed week! Each day students have 'on the water' time, learning the proper way to use each type of watercraft. Time will be set aside for boating related activities including PFD training, navigation rules, rigging boats, capsizing drills, and wind orientation. An integral part of camp is developing the knowledge to earn the State of Ohio Boaters Education Course license which involves 8-hours of in-class instruction as well as the hands-on training. After passing a written exam, students are licensed by the State of Ohio to operate any watercraft over 10 horsepower! Prerequisite: Campers must hold a Red Cross Level 3 or higher swimming certificate, be able to tread water for 2 minutes and swim 25 yards at any speed using any stroke. All equipment is provided.

Name: Fencing Camp

Details: Learn the fundamentals of modern foil fencing in this new day camp for kids ages 8 and older. You'll learn stretching, footwork, lunges, attack, parry-riposte, strategy, tactics and bouting. Fun and safety are emphasized while developing hand-eye coordination, agility, dexterity and stamina as well as social skills and manners. All equipment is provided, so try something new.

Name: Horseback Riding Camp
Type of camp: Sports
Cost: $350
Where: Maypine Farms
When: June 17 through Aug. 23
Deadline for registration: It depends upon which week you want to register for.
Details: Maypine Farm's summer riding camp is an experience for the serious horseman, even if you have never ridden before. Train daily with the areas finest riding instructors as each day brings a new adventure. Mornings include mounted lessons followed by a relaxing trail ride. You'll spend the rest of the day learning all about horses, including all aspects of horsemanship, grooming, feeding, vet care, as well as riding.
