Garfield National Historic Site To Hold Flag Retirement Ceremony Sunday

Old, dirty or otherwise unserviceable U.S. flags can be brought to the national park in the meantime

is holding a flag retirement ceremony from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday.

At the ceremony, local Boy Scout Troop 383 will respectfully burn old, dirty or otherwise unserviceable United States flags in accordance with U.S. Flag Code.

The pulic is welcome to attend the ceremony. Additionally, people are invited to bring their old flags to the park between now and Sunday.

Any flags dropped off will be respectfully destroyed during the ceremony. Flags may be dropped off at the site’s visitor center during regular business hours, which are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

"As we approach Flag Day on June 14, we are proud to host this ceremony to properly retire American flags," said Sherda Williams, the superintendent of James A. Garfield National Historic Site.

"We appreciate the opportunity to work with Boy Scout Troop 383 to demonstrate to the public the correct and respectful way to destroy unserviceable U.S. flags," she said.
