Top-Ranked Mentor Blitzes Strongsville to Remain Undefeated

Trubisky throws 3 TD passes to lead Cardinals

When you’re No. 1 on everybody’s charts, it’s best to keep the hits coming.

Cardinals quarterback Mitch Trubisky threw for 259 yards and had touchdown throws to Warren Ashton, Cameron Kavan and Brandon Fritts as he led to a 38-7 victory over host Strongsville on Friday night. Kavan also had a rushing touchdown.

Mentor (9-0 overall, 4-0 in the Northeast Ohio Conference) earned the top ranking of the Associated Press’ Division I poll this week with 28 first-place votes towering over former No. 1 Cincinnati Moeller who is the next closest at five votes and is ranked third.

The Cardinals also remained No. 1 in the Plain Dealer’s football poll and gave no indication that anyone should change their vote. Coach Steve Trivisonno welcomes the pressure such accolades bring upon his team.

“I think the kids are doing fine. We’re used to playing at a high level. It’s not like we haven’t been ranked high before. I think they’re used to it. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal,” Trivisonno said.

Strongsville (1-8, 0-4) got its only victory this season against Valley Forge, 35-0, on Sept. 23, but it was clear early their second would not be forthcoming Friday.

Trubisky hit Ashton for a 48-yard TD pass to put Mentor up, 10-0, in the second quarter. Although Mustangs quarterback Austin Pritchard briefly rallied Strongsville with a 2-yard TD pass to Corey Dohar, Kavan snared a 37-yarder from Trubisky to put Mentor firmly in command, 17-7.

Whatever doubts, if any, the Mentor faithful might have had were quickly erased as Connor Krizancic had a 1-yard TD run to close the half, 24-7.

Kavan’s 25-yard TD run and Trubisky’s third TD pass to Fritts for 26 yards increased Mentor’s advantage in the third quarter, 38-7.

“I think we’re playing well. We’ve got a big one this week at Twinsburg and we’ll see where we’re at. It gives us a shot to go 10-0 which is always a great opportunity and gets us ready for the playoffs,” Trivisonno said.

Mentor ends its regular season on the road against the Tigers (6-3, 3-1) on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
