See How Mentor High School & Lake Catholic Athletes Did This Weekend at State Championships

Students from Mentor High School and Lake Catholic competed at wrestling, gymnastics and bowling state championships this weekend

The Mentor High School gymnastics team posted its best score of the year at the right time and a Lake Catholic wrestler will graduate a two-time state placer.

The city's two high schools sent athletes to state championships in wrestling, gymnastics and bowling over the weekend. Here's a roundup of how they did:

  • The Mentor High gymnastics team finished fourth in the state, earning its best score of the year at its biggest competition. This accomplishment is all the more impressive because the team had to battle through several injuries this year.
  • Mentor High gymnasts Kayla Kosmerl, Allie Arthur and Lake Catholic's Rachel Gurley also competed in the individual competitions. Kosmerl took sixth in the floor routine and Gurley tied for 10th on the beam.
  • Lake Catholic Senior Matt Fee captured seventh place in his weight class. In his high school career, he made three trips to states, placed twice and won 111 matches, according to the Cougar Wrestling Club.
  • Mentor High wrestlers Warren Ashton and Alex Sweeney placed fourth and sixth in their respective weight classes. Teammates Jordan Victor and Dillon Ashton also competed at states.
  • Kevin Oravecz is the first Mentor High bowler in the school's history to compete at a state championship. He finished 31st out of the 100 best high school bowlers in Ohio.
