Mentor Softball Headed to Final Four

Students can take a spirit bus to support the team Thursday as it takes on the defending state champion North Canton Hoover Vikings

Later this week, the girls on the Mentor softball team will go where their predecessors have never been.

The team qualified for the state final four tournament after beating Medina, 5-2, Saturday morning. The Cardinals will take on the undefeated, defending state champion North Canton Hoover Vikings.

The game begins at 10 a.m. Thursday at Firestone Stadium,
1575 Firestone Pkwy, in Akron. Tickets will be on sale at the gate.

Freshman pitcher Allison Golic retired nine consecutive pitchers after the team got down early, 2-0, to Medina. After the game, Medina's coach gave ample credit to the young pitcher in an interview with The Plain Dealer

"Their pitcher did a great job," Medina coach Jessica Toocheck said. "She got in a groove and we weren't able to change it. You have to give her credit. She threw a heck of a game."

Students can support the team by taking a spirit bus that leaves Mentor High School at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. According to the athletic office, students should go to the athletic office and obtain a field trip permission form that must be signed and return by Wednesday.

The bus ride costs $10. Students will then have to buy a ticket at the gate for $8. The amount of forms the office gets back will determine the amount of buses needed.
