The Mayfield football team scored first Friday night.
But Mentor scored second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth.
The Cardinals scored 45 unanswered points in a 45-14 rout of the Mayfield Wildcats.
A big reason Mentor ran away with the game was wide receiver Conner Krizancic.
Krizancic ran for 38 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 74 yards and another touchdown.
Most of those touches and all of those touchdowns came in the first half.
"Had we kept going to him in the second half, he would have had a career night," Mentor Head Coach Steven Trivisonno said of Krizancic.
Krizancic hurt his collarbone when the Cardinals played Erie McDowell, PA, two weeks ago and it still hurt last week against St. Ignatius.
Krizancic said, not only did he feel better this week, but he felt the team was due for this win -- a complete win in all facets of the game.
"Last year, we had a lot of games like this," he said.
Even though the Cardinals controlled most of the game, Mayfield scored first. In fact, Mentor has fallen behind 7-0 at the beginning of all of their games this season.
"We have to figure that out," Trivisonno said. "We can do better than that early."
The Cardinals defense clamped down after the Wildcats' score and didn't allow any more points until after the Cardinals had scored seven touchdowns and a field goal.
Mentor accrued 498 yards to Mayfield's 243. And 77 of the Wildcats' yards came from a touchdown run by Mario Monastero in the fourth quarter after the game was effectively over.
Other Cardinal standouts were quarterback Mitch Trubisky who threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns, Nick Delisa who ran for 92 yards and a touchdown and Matt Schaefer who did yeoman's work with 21 yards rushing and 87 yards receiving but no touchdowns.
Wide receiver Brandon Fritts and quarterback Kade McClure also caught and ran for Cardinals' touchdowns, respectively.
Trivisonno said the last week provided fuel for Cardinals' collective fire.
"They caught us at the wrong time," he said. "We were a little upset after last week."
"The whole week we were angry."
