Mentor Athletes Continue Winning Ways At Districts

Mentor swimmer, bowlers, gymnasts and wrestlers earned a spot at state championship

athletes once again rose to the challenge while competing at their respective district and state championships this past weekend.

  • Ten Cardinal wrestlers competed at their district championship, known as "the meat grinder," last weekend at Mentor High.

Two earned a spot at the state championship this weekend in Columbus. Both qualifiers, Jordan Victor and Colin Kramer, were third place in their respective weight classes.

Warren Ashton also qualified as an alternate for state.

  • The  gymnastics team were district runners-up in the district meet on Saturday, which qualifies them for the state meet on Friday in Columbus.

The girls were led by Kayla Kosmerl, who was the all-around champion -- a title .

Other team members are Sarah Butterfield, Allie Arthur, Alex Aiello, Brittany Adkins, Lauren Cannon, Brianna Latta, Kelly Adkins, Kylie Victor, Alexandra Spalding, Riley McBride and Jordan Beebe.

  • The took first place this weekend in the CCC regional competition.

The team also received awards for Best Tumbling and Best Cheer Choreography and team member Dominique Fatica won runner up in the jump contest.

  • The boys bowling team qualified for the state bowling tournament by winning their district championship on Saturday.

The boys edged Austintown Fitch to win the tournament and will compete in Columbus on Friday for a state title. The team members are , Ryan Parr, Brandon Poplstein, Tom Bumbarger and Cameron Sullivan.

Unfortunately, the girls bowling team's impressive season ended Sunday in the districts when they did not qualify for states.

  • The on Friday night clinching the NOC Valley Division Title. The boys start tournament play against Riverside at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Euclid High. Tickets are available in the athletic office.
  • The girls basketball team won their sectional championship on Saturday.  They now play against Willoughby South at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Perry High. Tickets for this game are also available in the athletic office.
  • Swimmer Maria Coy was fourth in her heat and 12th overall in the 100 breaststroke at the state championship this weekend. She also had the distinction of being the fastest freshman in the pool.
