Lake Catholic Boys Basketball Team Falls To Dunbar

Cougars' playoff run ends at state semis

Sometimes Goliath wins.

The boys basketball team played hard but still fell to the unbeaten juggernaut Dunbar of Dayton 75-60 Friday morning in the state semis.

Despite Dunbar's size advantage, the Cougars were able to keep the game close for 3 1/2 quarters.

With 6:28 left in the fourth quarter, Dunbar only led 47-42. Senior Mike Whalen kept Lake Catholic close through the top half of the quarter, scoring eight of the Cougars' points consecutively.

But the Wolverines went on 13-5 run, which gave them breathing room that they had not enjoyed all game. Creighton commit Andre Yates led Dunbar (27-0) with 26 points.

However, the Cougars never folded. They closed the gap to 61-53 with two minutes left after a three from .

Unfortunately, they were unable to capitalize beyond that.

Lake Catholic held the lead 13-11 after the first quarter. But Dunbar went on an 8-0 run in the second quarter and never surrendered the lead thereafter.

The Wolverines led 28-24 at half time. But Lake Catholic had managed to control the tempo of first half. They slowed the pace down, which favored the Cougars' style.

Also, despite a size disadvantage, the Cougars outrebounded them in the first half 18-15. Junior Mark Baniewicz alone nabbed five boards.

But Dunbar controlled the pace of the game more in the second half and the score reflected that.

Whalen led the Cougars with 14 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Vuyancih also scored 13.

Despite the loss, this is still statistically the most successful boys basketball team in Lake Catholic's history.

They chalked the most wins (23) and were the first to make it to the final four.
