Mentor Could Learn From Metroparks Controlled Hunt

Metroparks controlled hunt in Madison is being viewed as a success. Mentor could copy a similar program to help with the deer population.

The results have been tallied for the Lake Metroparks controlled hunt. Jeffrey L. Frischkorn wrote an article for the News Herald Friday that broke down the math.

Fifteen deer were taken on the Metroparks River Road site in Madison. Ten of the 15 were does. This is a turnaround of potentially 20 deer being taken out of the reserves habitat for the coming year. With does producing one to three offspring a year, it is a sizable impact to the population. 

This program is similar to one that Kirtland and Kirtland Hills use in directing hunters to take a doe before a buck. I elaborated on this in my original article on deer population called

Mentor could adopt a similar program that would focus on doe culling and taking small numbers from only a few key properties in the city could have large impacts on future deer populations in the city.
