Year In Review: Changes In Mentor Schools

The Mentor Public School District closed one school in the spring and opened a new one in the fall

This was a year of big changes for the Mentor Schools District.

It closed because of a shrinking school budget and aging population that no longer needs as many elementary schools.

The district then renovated the building and reopened it with an entirely new purpose three months later.

The Cardinal Autism Resource and Education School .

CARES opened with nine students in two age groups: first through third grade and high school. LaPaglia plans to have 12 by January but it could be more if there's sufficient interest.

The district intends to increase the number of students each school year until it reaches 42 in 2014. They will range in age from prekindergarten to high school.

Additionally, Mentor Schools has one more change to anticipate in 2012.

Superintendent Jacqueline Hoynes

Hoynes teaches superintendency and school finance courses at Ashland University. She said that she would like to do more college-level teaching in the future.
