Video: Mentor Sparkles Cheerleading Squad Prepares for Its Debut Tonight

The Mentor Sparkes, a cheerleading squad made up of students who have special needs, will get a chance to show their stuff at the homecoming game tonight

A new squad will join the cheerleaders tonight at the homecoming game.

The Mentor Sparkles are a cheerleading squad of students with special needs. They have been practicing with the other cheerleaders to get ready for their big debut.

Cheerleading coach Heather Ambrus had the idea for the Sparkles, but it is cheerleader Rachael Stevens who has spearheaded their practices.

Mary Ann Kasten, grandmother of Sparkle Jimmy Dahlhausen, said the group has helped her grandson focus and express himself.

"He's so into it. It really gives him a chance to sparkle, so the name is appropriate," Kasten said.

After homecoming, the Sparkles will continue to cheer at home football and basketball games, Stevens said.
